i have a 1997 Discovery with 75k miles on it. i am assuming that some service items need to be taken care of at this mileage, however i am not sure of which. please advise.

thank you.

Mike

Your next major service is 90K, assuming the 60K has been done. An archive search on (60K or 90K) service intervals should pull up a maintenance schedule for you.

do you know when and what the last major service was? changing out some fluids is always good, and it's fun :)

ouch on the missing 60K service.

for your front, rear, and center differentials (aka the transfer case):

get yourself about 2 gallons of gear oil (80w90 or 85-140 if hot climate) - make sure you have at least one quart bottle with nozzle end to make filling easier. I also picked up a simple, cheap, spring-loaded suction pump that screws onto the quart bottle.

use a 1/2"-drive socket wrench to open the fill and drain plugs on the diffs. An 18" long wrench and a 3" extension will make it easier. Always make sure you can get the fill plug open, just loosen it a bit, BEFORE you yank the drain plug, or you could be screwed.

front & rear diffs take about 2 to 2.25 quarts each, transfer case takes about 2.3 quarts.

other things to do

check/change grease/oil in swivel balls

check engine hoses and serpentine belt

spark plugs & wires

obviously engine oil & oil filter

air filter

check all bushings

check coolant & radiator

lube driveshaft nipples

check roto for cracks (if you have rotoflex)

check driveshaft ujoints

think about the wheel bearings

I'm sure I'm forgetting things...

here is a tip for the transfer case fill plug, 97-Disco. Since a ratchet is rather thick, once you begin to back-out the filler plug, your wrench binds against the parking brake drum. I have a t-handle easy-out, fits perfectly and presto, plug can be unscrewed easily. An extension works somewhat OK, but the angle makes backing-out the plug a bit tiresome. Oh, the easy-out is what you commonly use to unscrew PVC fittings etc... It's now in my bag of on-board tools.
