I'm sure I'm going to catch hell for this neophite question but here goes. My local shop says that if I put an ARB bumper and winch on my Disco II that I should change out the suspension system. Go to an OME etc. They go on to say that if I change the suspension in the front that I should change the whole thing. - Is'nt it much easier to simply put heavier springs in the front? My LR dealer will not work with ARB so their not much help. My off road trips are limited to soft sand on the beach so I don't need a whole lot of travel, I do however need the winch. I'm looking for a simple answer / solution. Thanks

I think Land rover simply switches out the front springs when they install their winch kits, but their winch mounts weigh alot less than an ARB.

You have two choices. Either put on some Land Rover HD springs or go with OME. The LR HD springs will let you maintain the stock ride height. If you have more than 20k or 25k miles on your D2 I would also change shocks while you're at it. The OME springs and shocks are cheaper and better than the LR stuff but you'll end up with a 1 1/2" lift (40mm) and need to do both front and rear. Even with just street driving you'll notice a much better ride with the OME over the Land Rover springs. If you have SLS then there are other things you may need to consider with the OME springs.

As a side note I do have a set of Land Rover HD springs with about 10k miles on them that I would be willing to sell. To be honest with you I didn't really like them but they did keep the ride height stock with the ARB bumper and winch on my '99 D2. The Land Rover HD springs are the stock springs used in the Diesel LR Discovery II.

Thanks Carter, your right about Land Rover. I went to them first and they said they could do the winch kit and front springs. The amazing thing is that it cost roughly 1.5 times more than if I bought an ARB / winch. Am I missing something about the factory set up? Thanks again

Thanks Al, did you like the HD springs less than the stock ones? How much would you like for them?

The HD springs were better than the stock springs. The stock springs sag alot under the weight of the ARB and winch. They also feel very "mushy". The HD's helped a bit and made the ride feel okay. Make me an offer for the springs. You can email me directly.

There is a guy around town with stock suspension and an ARB w/ winch, you can actually see the thing bobbing violently up and down as it goes down the road. Plus the front is alot lower to the ground when he isnt going over bumps.
