I have a 98 disco with 4.0 auto. Rig has 70k miles and has developed an upper ungine ticking. I purchased used with 64k. I changed oil and tried oil additive and then castrol syntec, no help. Changed to amsoil and noise subsided slightly. Checked with a stetescope and found noise is coming from under both valve covers. No noise noticed in lower end. Checked and replaced all exhaust manifold and down pipe gaskets. Before opening engine I was hoping I may get some suggestions concerning where noise might be coming from. All help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

I have the exact same symptoms and tried the same things (except the Amsoil). It's in the shop now and they believe its the lifters. I would have tackled myself, but I have an extended (POS) warranty that I hope would cover. Good luck with your diagnosis. Keep us posted. -Mark |

Well, my 94 DiscoI has a tick too, but its coming from the #'s 6 and 8 cylinders. If you put your finger on the plug boot, you can feel it "ticking". |
