97 disco, 4.0l, automatic.

Occasionally, after driving, and shifting into park or through neutral, the Disco makes an awful plasic/metalic grinding noise, and most of the electrics don't work.
for example, AC, radio, dash lights.
All is fine after turning off ignition and rtestarting, but even in gear, the electrics are still out.

I think this is a power supply issue to the shifter/ignition lockout.
I'd just replace the switch if I didn't have this electric wierdness. Could this all be from just the lockout switch?
Any thoughts????

Thanks

I've had this. It seems to happen on short trips with me. All of the interior electrics are gone and when you shift into park it makes the awful noise, right?

Unfortunately I don't know what causes it, but when I notice that nothing electric is running, I pull over and shut the truck off in "Drive'. then I shift to park and restart. Doesn't fix the problem , but it prevents that horrible grinding noise.

Just wanted to let you know you're not alone,
Doug

Any Ideas???

I found an isolator switch for considerably less $$ than dealer, so if and when I replace it, I'll report back.

Same here on my 1997 DI with about 75,000, the 1996 DI has not had this problem though. Anyone else?

And now the latest........

The instrument lights don't work. And other electrical odds and ends (lights, mostly) stop working when I turn on the Headlights. BUT WAIT!!! The right rear tail light (the little red rectangular one in the bumper) won't work....
Get on back in dirt, swap bulbs, still THE RIGHT ONE WONT WORK!!!
hmmmmmmmmm..... FUSES!!! yep , #8 a 10amp - blown!!
Put in a new one, 10 seconds later PIPFFFFF blown. Turn of lighs (it's night now) insert another 10Amp. Turn on lights.......PIPFFFF.

Pull out the Haynes and have a seat in the house.

According to the Haynes Manual's wiring diagrams, the neutral lockout switch, an ignition switch curcuit, the instrument panel lights, and the right rear tail light (the little red rectangular one in the bumper) all share the SAME EARTH CONNECTION (that's english for "ground").
Its Earth connection #11(?) located behind the right interior kick panel.

I'll let you all know if it works. Not today, I gotta babysit and cut the lawn.

I have this same noise but only in low range and without the associated electrical issues.

Has anyone figured this one out?

Not sure what the grinding sound is but the light issues certainly sound like a grounding issue... pull all the grounds off the truck and inspect.. there are 5 total.. 2 in engine bay and three along the frame rails.. These grounds look fine on visual inspection (at least the black plastic covers for the ground wire looks good) but once you have the ground in your hand, you'll see tons of corrosion.. $25 worth of cables will make a lot of your Disco Ghosts go away...
