My '99 DII has started to stumble and mis-fire. It has about 54k on the clock. I had a miss on cylinder 8 a few weeks ago and now it is consistently missing on cylinder 3. No other problems I'm aware of. I am planning to replace the plugs and wires. Anything else I should be looking at as a source for the mis-fire?

Also, what engineering minion from the pits of hell decided to wedge the ignition coils down in the hole between the engine and the bulkhead? Any pointers from other DII owners about changing the plug wires? It seems almost impossible to get your hand back there to disconnect/reconnect. Any suggestions, other than "Find an assistant with really small hands", would be appreciated.

I am considering the Bosch Platinum+4 plugs. Any reason, other than price, to avoid these in the Disco? They are readily available and are reputed to be dependable, long lasting and hassle free. Of course, these days everything is billed as the silver bullet that will effortlessly resolve all of your problems. Guaranteed! :) Anyone tried returning them on the Bosch satisfaction guarantee if they didn't work out?

I had the same problem on my '99 D2 since 15k miles. The dealer replaced the coil packs and wires a number of times until I took it to a new dealer and had them check the valves. At first the other dealer said it's just the plug wires (this after they replaced the coil pack again) but then they found carbon build up and replaced the top end of my engine. I'm not saying you don't need to replace your plug wires but these engines do have a history.

The evil engineer was the one who decided to do away with the distributor!

Something is wrong with an engine with no distributor!

How's that Paul? Even if my D2 had a distributor it would have had misfires.

If your DII had a distributor, it would have been a 3.9 and they didn't have the same problem with carbon.

Obviously, I was making a silly Luddite comment making it obvious to all of you that I still long for the days when a tune up required an allen wrench and a dwell meter and the distributor had a little slide-up window!

Yes, I know that a crank trigger ignition has many advantages that just don't work with distributors, but we did fine with them for a long time.

Mine is doing the same thing. I have a leaky injector issue which I believe is the cause. We'll see tomorrow. I am replacing it.
