Hello,

Go figure everything goes to hell after the warranty expires. I recently took my Disco to the dealer because my blower motor wasn't working. They also did scheduled maintenance (45,000 miles). In the process, they said that I needed new brake pads PLUS rotors ($500 for the front, $500 for the rear - said that I had "uneven wear"), 2 oil leaks ($1,500 each), one of my windows needed a new watchamacallit, and, oh, to replace the blower motor will be $600.

I decided not to do anything until I find out more.

Anyway - most importantly, does this sound right about the brakes? I took it to a brake shop, they said I had an ABS problem which was causing uneven wear, and need to take it to the dealer. I'm looking for recalls or something I can blame on Land Rover. Anything?? Doesn't seem right to have an ABS problem in a 4.5 year old car. Anyway, the problem may have existed when it was still under warranty.

Now about the blower motor - can this just be fixed instead of replaced? After they looked at it, it started working again for a few days. Is $600 reasonable? Could it be done cheaper elsewhere?

I don't care about the window (its the passenger side), so I'm not going to fix that.

The oil leak - my feeling is that if the car lasts another 3-4 years, I don't care if it falls apart in the end. Think I can get by just ignoring it?

Thanks for any help - I'm totally ignorant about this stuff.

eh,

Just pop in some pads and don't sweat it. Replacing rotors is over rated in my book.

Does your ABS light come on? Does the blower motor only stop when on high?

No, the ABS light doesn't come on (although the check engine light is on.) The blower motor _used_ to only stop when on high, I think, but now it doesn't work at all (although it did work for a few days after they looked at it.)

Thanks,

Mike

mike,

you can replace the pads and rotors for cheap if you do it yourself. I just did my pads on my DII and it was really easy - expeditionexchange.com has a great tutorial but don't know if they have one on DIs. Atlantic British (web site) has complete packages for a couple hundred bucks - rotors and pads. As for the leaks - depends on how bad they are - if you just have to add fluids everyone once in a while I personally would look at it as self changing. I know Rovers leak alot.
my 2 cents...

I just had my blower motor relay replaced. You may only need the same. Mike J.

Mike,
Check with Nathan Crabtree at www.discountrovers.com. He has genuine rover brake pads full set (front/rear) for $69.95.

I just got an email from www.Rovercannibal.com and he has an used blower for $160. that beats 600, if you have to go that route. I would also check ground connection, along with relay

Mike -

On the pads and rotors, if you are not the do it yourself type, you can purchase those from discountrovers.com for a good price, then take them to a local shop mechanic you trust for install and save a huge amount of $$$.

Basically the same for everything else. You can leave the leaks go if you don't mind your driveway getting stained and keep an eye on your oil level. Me, I would have the same local guy check it out.

BRAKES:
I'll bet your rotors are fine - you just need new pads for about $70 front & rear.

Do you have brake fluid leaking out of the calipers? Tell-tale signs are "wet" calipers and pads, golden/clear fluid dripping onto inside of rim.

If brakes are more or less functioning properly but you just have a little uneven wear, that just means you'll have to change pads a bit more frequently (front pads only - rears last almost forever).

If you can brush your teeth, you can change your pads yourself. It's that easy. But change those pads before the actual pad wears away and the metal base of the pad grinds into those rotors. If you've scored your rotors, you'll know it by the fingernails-on-chalkboard sound.

OIL LEAKS:
>"2 oil leaks ($1,500 each)"

Where did they say you are leaking from?

BLOWER MOTOR:
Maybe just the relay is bad, or maybe it's a bad connection, if you need to replace the motor, look at alternatives to buying and installing new at dealer. Mine used to cut out on high and I cleaned the switch contact and all has been well for about 2 years now.

WINDOW:
probably need a new actuator/window lift motor thingamajig. You should be able to do that yourself too, or have an independent shop do it for you for much less $$$. But like you said, it ain't that important...every day my rear windows don't go up or down, but the sun still does.

The dealer mantra is all-too-often "Why fix when you can replace at customer's expense?"

Brakes: Do it yourself. Change the rotors what the hell it's cheap.

Oil Leaks: Get used to it. Get cardboard for garage of floor.

Blower Motor: Buy part off internet and have some garage do it if you don't want to do it yourself.

Window: Sounds like you need a new regulator. i understand they are posting that fix in the Tech Section Soon.

Welcome aboard. Invest in a repair Manual.

Every time I start my 2001 Disco2 I hear a vibration coming from the brake pedal. Occasionally, if I'm turning and braking on rough road I feel a moderate vibration on the pedal for an instant. This has happened since I purchased it with 11,000 miles. Everything else appears to be fine and it is truly an amazing vehicle. Whats up with the brakes? Thanks for any help. Tom
