When driving at hwy speeds the disco is hesitating and "misfiring" especially at light acceleration. Seems to happen only when AC is turned on. I suspect the alternator since the problem is much more obvious at high amp draw. I checked the voltage at the coil when driving and it showed 13.2-13.6v, the lower volt was noted at above 3000 rpm, the higher at around 1500. Any ideas to this, is there anything to check yourself in the MM-alt, or is just to go to a shop with it? Could it be something else, fuel pump? I'm leaving on a 7000 mile vacation trip within a week so I need to get this sorted now. (I'm in Europe, so it's a 3,9 even though it's 96) Thanks, T |

I have the same problem with a Defender I'm working on. The general consensus among those I've spoken with is that this is most likely a bad ground condition. I haven't had a chance to apply it to the Defender yet, but I've been told to check the ground at the inner fender well, the attachment to the block, the ECU ground and all of the connections at the ECU. I originally questioned this diagnosis, but after considering it, it makes sense if the A/C and the ECU have a common ground. YMMV |

I took out the alt (very conveniently located btw.) and had it tested in a bench, no problems found. The bad ground condition is interesting, I'll do a few checks along that line. As you say it could be interesting to check which components are grounded where, but my factory manual doesn't contain any electrical drawings, is that a separate manual? My other idea is that the ignition coil (which has been relocated to the side of the air filter box) is on the way out (maybe due to excessive heat), but that doesn't really explain the AC relation? Well, keep me posted if you manage to track the problem on the Defender. Thanks, T |
