Hi. I just moved to Whittier CA (south east LA county) and I'm looking for somebody knowledgeable to work on the '96 Discovery I just bought. Also hopefully somebody with reasonable prices... I'd like to find somebody who can do all the work on my Land Rover, including recommending and installing aftermarket parts like a new bumper, winch, lift kit, skid plates, whatever.

I was off-roading yesterday and after about an hour with front/rear A/C and 4 low the truck overheated. That really sucked - is this normal for these vehicles? I'm supposed to go to Big Bear next weekend and I want to make sure it's "OK" before I go.

BTW I also posted this at www.sclr.org just in case any of you are reading both posts...

Steve at British Car Service, 310-306-6109, will get you sorted. They are based in the Marina, about 40 minutes from Whittier

Thanks, Neil. I've heard of these people before - have you had experience with them? If so, I assume it's been good!

Yes, good service. I've just had the basic oil change done, I've just had my truck since March. They do appear very busy but then again the west side is full of various Land Rovers. I'm having Steve hook me up with a LR Brush Bar, he got me a dam good deal.

Since your local make sure to check out next weekends Big Bear meet, hope to see you up there.

A similar question: How do places like this compare to the dealership? I'd rather take my vehicle to an independent shop because I think they might be more knowledgeable or at least take more personal care of the vehicle. They would be more likely to recommend a product that's better than a stock one vs. the dealership who would always replace a broken axle with another stock axle or whatever (am I wrong on this?).

My wife prefers the dealership because she thinks they'll stand by their work better and you can get the work warrantied at any dealership if something goes wrong. She also thinks they'd be more knowledgeable than an independent shop and worth the extra $.

Any thoughts?
