My 95 Disco has a whining noise that starts at 25 and builds in frequencey and volume til the wind noise at 60 or so drowns it out. It's not tires because ou can backoff slightly and eliminate it. If you backoff completely it comes back at about the same level and pitch. Definitely a mechanical sound.

I thought rear diff but I hear those last a long time. Also I don't know how to tell between the things I think are speed related(other than the street tires that wouldn't change with slight throttle changes): 1) Rear diff, 2)Transfer Case? 3) Front Diff.

Is there a part of the trans that carries cumulative speed like a final drive section?

This Disco has 105k on the clock and is new to me. No offroad history but I'm guessing it's pulled a lot of trailers.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I have 96 that whines. Typical t-case noise. You should get a girlfriend/wife that talks a lot; you won't hear the whine anymore. Or at least it won't bother you as much.

Yeah, I'm with Matt, drive with your wife(G.F.) and after about an hour of chatter, that T-case whine will sound like angels singing!!! Seriously, they all seem to have some degree of noise, my 96 does too.. JMcD

Got a 97, it whines from T-case. Just changed fluids with synthetics, same whine. I am getting a new stereo to drown both the whine and the roar from my Bridgestone Dueler MTs. Who in the hell said these tires were somewhat quite must have had a beefed up stereo or rides alot with his wife.

I'm adding a "plumber's special" roof basket that I'm specifically engineering for maximum wind noise to help drown out the whine from my '95.

My 96 SE has whined exactly like that for the past 5 years. After a day off-road in low, you will notice it gets louder for a while. Taking the kids along will also drown it out. I haven't really noticed it much at all since our twin boys turned 2!!!

If it has pulled trailer alot - check the rear diff - they don't last all that long -the carriers are crappy. Anyway, depending on trailer weight, alot of strain is on the rear axle.

This isn't to say all the Tcase comments aren't strong possibilties too. May be a combination of both?

What do the fluids look like when drained - anything metallic?

Bill: HAd the fluids changed but they didn't think to get a report. Sounds like the best bet is drive it till the offending part locks up or falls out. For the other guys, I have to remove remove the exhaust system manifold back to acheive MILS status.

Put it in low range and then make note of what mph it starts. This will help isolate it.

I have a 96 w/90k that is much noisier than my 94 w/78k.
