Just got my Saudi Grill. How bad is the install? Are there any "surprises" associated with the install? Like hidden bolts or needing to remove both headlight assembly?
Anyone had success with this?
Thanks all.

It is pretty simple. I think this is right but if I left anything out, someone please fill in the gaps.

You need to remove on one side the turn signal light (there is a little spring clip that holds it in from inside). It will reveal some screws that will allow removal of the black curved piece under the lights. Once that is off all your should need to do is remove the screws at the top of the grill and you are set.

I purchased it from the northeast british ltd.? I think that's the name. Check some of the posts and you can find. Look at the D2 post about the grills that's currently running. It speaks of a place were these can be purchased for $25. I paid $60 for mine.

My grill is cracked at 2 of the 3 screws above. Need to replace it anyways. May replace it with a saudi grill. Any pros/cons other than looks?

it will give you 12 more horsepower.. and it also negated the need for lockers at it increases traction.... :)

no, no other pros than looks, and to some people the looks are a con..

Jack,

Is this a screen to modify the existing grill or a total replacement grill? The Saudi ones I have seen were a bit diffrent the seemd to have big holes insted of a mesh and cost about 3 times as much?

Here is the PN that I have listed "DHB102590LML GRILLE PANEL MESH TYPE DISCO "
Is it the same PN you ordered? I was going to order one up for my 97 D1 but have not done so

Dee, I have never seen the one you are speaking of. I got mine from Northeast British Parts. It resembles or IS the one found on Gils (see above). I'm just hoping for a little cooling. It is useless to get it for looks as mine is covered by 2 Hella 4ks. I figured that any extra cooling help was a good thing.

Well I think it looks cool too, and with that one place selling them for $25 I am thiking of doing it but first, if you have an ARB bullbar can you remove the old grill and install the new one without removing the bumper???

YES.. im a mexican at heart, and im a really big fan of armor-all!!

dee.. its a full replacment grill,
step 1) pop the old one out
step 2) pop new saudi grill in
step 3)apply liberal amounts of armour-all to tires before taking any pictures

If nobody knows by the end of the day I will probablly just take it apart after work and see if I can figure it out for myself, I really want the grill just not if it means the trouble of taking the ARB w/ winch off.

All you have to do is remove the screws at the top and pop the grill out. takes about 10 minutes and requires very little brainpower.

If you have not installed your saudi grill yet. I got one last week. It was a breeze to install. Even with a full factory brush bar and 2 hella 4000's, it only took about half an hour. Does anyone know if it really helps with cooling? That is the main reason I got it but have not driven far enough to tell.

I put the grill on in March. I can't remember the name of the place that I gat it from. When I get home I will check and post it so those of you interested can do some price comparing.
I have an ARB bull bar w/o a winch and I was able to put it onw.o any problem. The only screws that i removed were the 3 top screws. I then slid the factory grill to one side and popped out the other. I slid the new one back on and put the screws in. It took about 15 min.
Good luck.

I think there is a downside to that grill. The stock grill on the bumper is designed (or at least appears to be) in such a way to allow air in, but minimize water intake. I have practiced this on more than one occasion. :)

With that big opening, you won't very easily be able to create a wake to push the water forward. It will just come right in.

Jack, Is the mesh plastic or Wire? also is the fit and finish as good as the orginal?

Thanks

It's hard to tell if it was plastic or wire. If it was wire, then it was plastic coated. To me, it looks great and fits like a glove. If it cools then it was the best $60 ever spent.

Unless you do some heavy wading RVR, I don't think that is that much of a downside. The height on the truck makes wading pretty straighforward unless you are heading into deep water. I do see your issue when doing heavy off road/trail stuff.

Tom:
On my last wheeling trip, we had water coming out the front of a friend of mine's D I. I suspect that if you're in that deep, the bumper and air dam (if you still have it) are doing the majority of Bow Wave origination.

I'm still trying to figure out why we had water coming out the front of the grille of a D I though!

My biggest complaint about wading is having to drain the diffs that somehow seem to collect far too much water and then blow it out the hub seals.

Someday, I'll actually put on the fittings and hose to extend the breathers that are on a shelf in the basement!

RVR, I seriously doubt the stock grill pushes any water aside while wading at a few mph. If it does push aside more than the suadi grill, its negligible.
What worries me about the Saudi grill is the builup of ice. The stock grill has horizontal slats angled downward, which might help prevent the formation of ice on the fans. The saudi grill allows for snow/ice to build up on the fans.

And Dee, the saudi grill has metal mesh and seems to be of better quality than the original, which is all plastic.

Hey, I can only say what I witnessed. I was out wheeling and doing water crossings where I had the bow coming from right on top of the hood, as the water was way deep. I think that the grill in it's stock formation helped due to the forward motion more than pretty much what amounts to a hole would.

It is probably the "Saudi grill" for a reason!

If ice Buildup or dams are a worry put the orginal grill back on in the winter or when going on a submarine trip... Ping Ping Ping

I have the saudi grill because I like the way the Disco looks with it. Never really thought much about water ingress though, but with the mesh being recessed it would be very easy to cut a piece of plastic to put over the mesh when fording and then easily remove once done.

Have a grill cover made like the series had.
It could have two functions.
One would be to snap on before going deep and the other would be to have on for cold winter days.
I live in Florida so the cold winter days aren't an issue.

One suggestion for those fitting the Saudi grille- on mine the plastic piping around the edge of the main hole falls off, or at least sags, and looks really daggy. I took my grille off, removed the wire mesh, and glued the piping to the grille so it wouldnt sag anymore.
Also, in Saudi, the grille came with a 120A alternator, and baffles to improve airflow. The holes in the crosspanel above the lights were covered over, and a big plastic panel screwed to the frame at the front cross member reaching nearly back to the front of the oil pan - cut out to clear the oil filter. Not quite sure what this is supposed to do - stop crud getting up onto front of engine, or water??

I think there was a shitload of them left over for the Saudi market and when the DII came out these sat in a parts house's to rot. I checked 2 weeks ago from one of my suppliers for the same part in the UK and price was 110 pounds, So Rover Land must have bought the whole lot them and is selling dirt cheep. I could not modify my old grill for so little. Wait untill the DIII comes out the DII stuff will be cheeper then. Sad but true the Ford Explorer and Disco III will most likely share common trim and mechanicals

Just a thought the wire mesh may fit on a DII grill you can gut out the center and attach it in the same manner as the DI grill is modified. Just a guess i have not worked on any D2

Have you got D-web stickers on your truck Dee?

I do, proud sponsor. Although I'll not punch anybody in the face if they make snide comments about me hanging out here. Might not pull them out of a hole, but won't punch 'em in the nose!

Oh yeah, I still think I can use the sawzall and make my own Saudi grille, at least until I find somebody who can ship me a radiator in one piece!

Yeah, that's a hot topic right now about loose lips in DC. The pentagon is tap dancing in front of the Saudis in order to keep the use of those nice airfields.

No matter what choice of Grill you go with, it is going to get covered up if you install a big ass bumper with a winch and lights. :)

"No matter what choice of Grill you go with, it is going to get covered up if you install a big ass bumper with a winch and lights."

I think that is why some of us are installing the grill, to get a little more air in there after we block it off more with lights and winches. I don't have any real way of knowing whether or not it works but for $30 its cheap peace of mind. It might not be a big deal for most of you outside of the south but down here it isn't uncomon for it to be in the mid to upper 90's all freakin day long.

Interesting comment about the south Carter. Yeah it gets damn hot down there. Just a week ago the temps at my home in Jacksonville, NC with heat indices were hovering in the 100's all day long. Damn Hot, couldn't stand it.

Is installing a mesh grill going to assist the engine in staying cool? Who knows? IMHO, I doubt it. We are still driving a slow moving brick where air flow vs vehicle speed ratios really don't matter.
