I just got my Disco a few weeks ago. I took it for its first "real" offroading a couple days ago. After about 1 hour in maybe 80 degree heat in 4 low with front and rear a/c blasting the engine overheated. Is this "normal"? I certainly hope not...

Unfortunately too somebody else was driving so I'm not sure how long he was running it like this. I only smelled the coolant maybe 1 minute before we stopped so I'm hoping for the best!

I've been having an ongoing problem with this as well...

I have a 94, and I just replaced the radiator. It was partially clogged. It has helped somewhat, but when I'm in the sand (4-wheeling on Nauset Beach on Cape Cod), the temp starts to rise, even with the AC off...

I pull over, and let it cool off, then ride until it happens again, even with the new radiator.

I'm not dropping into low, should I??
Driving the Disco in the sand is new to me. I've been driving a Mazda 4X4 up until about a year ago...

I fear it may be the head gasket, thoughts??

I had a problem in Moab(105 degrees). Old mud between the a/c and Radiator from other off-roading on the past. Open the hood and rev engine to 1500-2000 rpms, this will let the heat out from under hood and reving engine speeds up water pump and fan. After I wash the mud out, it ran cool all the time in low range.

Check/replace the thermostat.

ditch the thermostat! I run all my landys without one. Make sure radiator etc is clean from mud etc.
Make sure antifreez/summercoolant is up to scratch. Remember Ally heads arent cheap to replace.
My 2pence...

I work in the desert and all our vehicles overheat in the 55 degree celcius conditions. All we do is open all the windows and crank the heater on full with the fan going, assists the radiator in losing heat.
Sorry but I have to disagree about using the low box in sand. Use high range as much as possible without difflock - its momentum that gets you through sand. When you bog down, try low box to get yourself out but only for a little bit, if that doesnt work then deflate your tyres - works wonders!! Try to stay away from diff lock as it tends to dig you allllll the way in!!

aclarke,

How old is your DISCO?

I have a 2001 D2. I live 5000' above sea level and experience 105 Arizona heat. I work my DISCO VERY hard in the desert heat and have never had my temperature gage move. I've had mine in 4-low for hours.

If your DISCO is as new as mine . . . you probably have a problem.

High high was your friend letting the RPM get?
