Sorry to ask such a general question, but I am close to making a purchase of a used Disco I and I would like to know if a particular year is better that others when selecting. I have read lots of threads, but want some direct advice. My driving would be mostly on road. I plan to drive to work (20 miles RT) two-three times a week (train other days). I am looking to spend about $10-$15k pending mileage and features... Any advice on years/models? |

I just bought a Disco 1 a few days ago. I asked the same question and was told to look at the early ones ('94 or so) or the most recent ('98-'99). I don't recall specifics as to why, sorry. As a point of reference. I just picked up a '99 D1 with 55K miles (higher than I would have liked) for $16,900. I feel as though I got a really good deal. All the proper maintenance has been done (I rec. the records). It is white/tan, has running boards, brush guard, Hella lights, and is in great shape. HTH Todd |

IMHO, look for as new as you can find/afford, that has a clean service history, well-kept records, etc. One caveat, though.... the 4.0 ('96-on) is more prone to valve issues than the 3.9 Discos ('94-'95), but seem to not be as common of a problem the newer the vehicle (i.e, a '96 would be more likely to have issues than a '99 DI). And, you're price range puts you right into the '96-'97 model year sales, so, you REALLY need to scrutinize the vehicle's records concerning valve issues. IMHO, FWIW, YMMV...... -L |

thanks... this is a start for me... I have tested a 1995 with 69k for $11,900 and a 1998 with 60k for $16,900...both didn't seem right to me... |

The '94 and '95 have the 3.9 with a distributor, and use OBD-1. '96-on uses the distributor 4.0 with the OBD-II engine management system. The '95 might be a tad high, depends on how clena the truck was, the '98 sounds like a reasonable price, again, depending on how clean the truck is and how well it has been taken care of (ie, check the records!) What didn't seem right about them? What do you want, and what do you want to avoid? -L |

well... the 1998 had been repainted in spots... ummmm. can you say wrecked? perhaps not. the 1995 was clean, but both were at local used car places. thye both bought out of an auction. I am planning to beat them and go the auction with a mechanic friend and buy direct. I should be able to get something with lower mileage. I aslo have a dealer bringing me a '96 with 37k on it... no sunroof... for $13,900. Is there a way to check the car (from a used non-LR dealer) with a LR delaer for service records? |

I actually got a copy of the service records on my '99 before I made the offer. I simply called the dealer it was serviced at, explained the situation, and was fortunate enough to get a sympathetic mechanic. I doubt they would do this if I was buying from a personal party though. FWIW Todd |

Post the VIN number here. Some folks who frequent the site work at dealerships and are happy to do it for you. Also, a local dealership should want to do it. They start a relationship with you for future service when you buy your used one (or so they might think, at least). Also, keep in mind that not all Rovers are maintained by dealerships. Full maintenance records are nice, but you could pass a up a really nice independantly maintained one if you only use dealer records as your guide. Tom |
