If I install (GPS compatible) topo maps on my laptop, what will I need to use it as a GPS?

I'm only planing on using the GPS while wheeling so having a handheld isn't needed.

Also, what are some godd external antennas?

Thanks!
Neal

You'll need a handheld GPS and an interface cable. What external antenna to get may depend on what GPS you get.

You _may_ need software for the GPS to communicate with the map software on the laptop.

That is a link to the GPS store where they list some items available for the PC.

You could also look at the Delorme earthmate. It is a GPS that is about the size of a deck of cards, has built in ant and works great with a laptop. I have one and like it because I use it just for offroading in the middle of nowhere(with laptop). You can use it with a palm for backpacking, but if you want it for backpacking I would say get something else. Try delorme.com

I use a Garmin GPS III+ and pug it into my laptop and with the new version of MapSource, it displays the GPS map and info on the screen with real time updating. Then you can also use just the GPS for backpacking, mountian biking, boating etc...

If you wanted to go with just something for you laptop then yes. As said before you can get a PCM card to interface with it for under $200. Everyone I have talked to says its good but does not compare to the the real thing.

why bother with a card when you can get a decent handheld with PC cable for less?

That was my point. Get a good handheld and use it through the PC. I know Garmin makes software now that alows you to do this. You can get a good new one off EBay for a good price.

But if you REALLY want a PC card go with it.

All Just my 2 cents.
