Sorry to bog the board down in what has been a topic of many past postings, but I can't let this go. Vibration, 30mph to 40mph on a fairly new (14,000 miles now) Disco II SE, auto. All stock, no mods, has done this since day 1. 11 service visits later, 4 trys at tire re-balancings...dealer say "normal" behavior.... Transmission lugging. Before I go back and demand the drive-shaft removal test (testing with CDL locked and one shaft removed in the hopes it's the rear drive shaft ) I want to ask the board members one more time if anyone else has experienced this. If this is "normal" then evey disco II owner of that year should say Yeah I feel that too. BTW, tires are stock goodyear warngler hp's 255/65 r16. I pestered the dealer into a front shaft replacement...which did smoothed out some hi-speed vibes I had. The 30-40mph is a wobble felt in the seat...no steering feedback....but very noticeable in the seat. I have exhusted the LR of Guildford CT willingness to correct this and will be going to dealer #3 in attempt to figure it out.

No, that is not normal. If they tell you it's like that on all D2's then I would take a ride in another vehicle in the lot and compare it. Keep records of the problem in case you need to hit them with the lemon law. Is there another dealer in the area? If you can take it there before you start to challenge them legally. Play nice until you have no more options.

Don,

I've just put 19,000 miles on my 01 Disco II SD w/ the same tires as yours.Mine is all stock.
To answer your question, I have no such vibration. I got the truck at 10,700 miles and I have no issues to date.

Good luck
Neil

I know I have a 99D1 but I experienced the exact same problems. I exhausted the dealership and had no options. My service rep took me aside and said that there was nothing more LR could do and that it was all in my head. He said to take it to the tire place next door and have it LOAD balanced and alligned. I did. The problems are gone. I pestered the dealer because I thought that I had a blown shock and transmission problems. I was wrong. This took 3 trips to the dealer.

i have a '97 D1 and i have really bad vibes between 62 and 68 mph. i know it isn't wheel balance or alignment, and the dealership told me that the sterring and suspension are sound. i had laready had my suspisions that it might be the front driveshaft, and after reading about your problem, i think it might just be that. i hopeit's just a u-joint or something, i couldn't afford a new shaft. what did the vibes up front feel like before you rpleace your front shaft? mine come through the steering wheel for the most part.

Hi All

have your alignment checked... well i should say "toe" checked. i have a 95 D1 which had the same problem. went back for multiple tire balancing and it never fixed the problem. had the "toe" check and adjusted... fixed the problem. CraigK DII had the SAME problems, and tried the same wheel balancing fix with no luck... he had his "toe" adjusted and viola, his problem went away as well

Wow. I love this board....5 minutes and you get help. For those that asked me questions. I never had any steering vibe feedback. LR Guilford replaced the front shaft after the 1st test drive...I could best describe that hi-speed vibe as if the tires were out-of-round ....just an all over vibe. Now at 65-75 when it use to act up it is very smooth with the new drive shaft. Two follow up questions...what is a tire load balance ? I have had the tires balanced at two LR dealers, a goodyear shop and a speedshop. All used those hi-tech looking spin balancers... last time I was told putting weights on the inside & outside of the rim would help...which is how it was balanced. Toe-in....I could be wrong but I am 99% sure the vibe is coming from middle or rear of the truck. Toe-in is a term applied to the front wheels and the angle they sit at correct ?

I would keep taking to the dealer, and document each trip. It sounds like you might be able to exercise your lemon law rights. Have your attorney write a letter on your behalf to LRNA. They will often replace the vehicle before they are stuck with a bad title since they will repair it and resell it to the public.

I know this becaasue I bought my truck (through a friend) from LRNA's HQ. They bought it from someone who was one trip short of exercising their lemon law rights.

Ken - i had an alignment done when i got my new tires in January. i'd hope that it hasn't gotten out of alignment since then. the problem started in April/May sometime.

If you think that it is drive-train related drive at the speed that the vibe is occuring and then put your truck in neutral and see if you can still feel the vibe.

These are the toughest to track down.

Things to check. has it been hit AT ALL? Check all frame dimensions etc.

My Uncle had front end problems with a Chrysler. It turned out to be damage casued from being tied down to a car carrier improperly.

Load balancing - The process of balancing the tires with a load on the tire. Our Xterra had a vibration that we could get rid of. Had the tires spin balanced twice, but no luck. Finally the dealership did a load balance on the tires only to find out that two of the tires were slightly out of round under load (but not on the spin balancer). They replaced both tires for free!

As a side note, rumor has it that a few Discos left the factor with the center diff lock (CDL) engaged. That will give you some vibration and some extra transfer case noise at high speeds. Since there is no lever and no CDL light on a D2, it's pretty hard for a novice to know if it's engaged or not.

Thanks,
Mike B.

Hmmmm... since the D2 has an indicator light to show when the CDL is on and since it also indicates that the ETC is off when you start with the CDL on I don't think that rumor holds much value. But it is a British vehicle so the CDL could be on and the electrical system fail and not indicate it. :)

If CDL was engaged, the tyres would screech and howl as you went around corners, especially on the nice slick carpark down at the mall:)

Bruce.

It's not a rumor, more than a few folks new to the 4x4 world had to have new components because of this. Apparently the tboxes came locked and in some rigs, the switches to indicate lock were not installed or not working, therefore acting as a bypass. There was one owner who even had the replacement tbox locked but the light stayed off.

In the shop manual (ed 5), under the "improvements" section for the LT230SE, the last item is curious:

"Fixed setting of diff lock warning lamp switch on vehicles fitted with diff lock"

I posted this question and one fact I did not include was I purchased this truck new in Oct of 2001. I had been admiring it for some time, but did notice it had sat in the lot in the same spot for almost a year without being moved. The tire load test sounds good. I will try that
