Hi everyone, this is my first post to the board. I have a 96 ES TDi, and the rear sunroof begins to open, then sticks. The initial movement is to the rear, but the next bit (judging by the front roof, it's supposed to lift) doesn't happen. I've cleaned out the rails either side, but no result. Ideas? Tim (UK) |

It's a pretty common problem, I've tried to grease mine as well, and it hasn't helped. The dealer offered to replace the sunroof rails and stuff for about 1000 dollars. I'm at a loss as well. |

I hear ya! If I push up VERY slightly the rear sunroof opens fine. The front one makes a nasty skipping noise and goes back crooked and eventually stops - I'm guessing one of the tracks is FU'd... Good luck Mandotim, I'll be watching this post to see if a sunroof guru decides to grace us with his or her presence... Chuckster |

Mine does the same thing occasionally. If I am on a bumpy road, I have my my passenger hold the button to open it, and look for a large pot hole or bump then SLAM! I hit it so freaking hard that the sunroof is jostled, and opens freely. Great technique. If you are on the interstate, just aim for some road-kill or highway barrel, side impacts work okay too. Or you could do what I really do, and just lean back and manually pop it up. It will then slide back (if the button is pressed of course) Brendan Kearns 95 Disco with new OME suspension being installed today (Woo Hoo! Thanks Ho!) www.howboucha.com |

Mine does the same thing. It appears to me as though there is a little clip at the front of the sunroof on the frame that is attached to the truck that holds the glass in place (the little plastic handle at the front of the glass piece has a cavity into which the clip fits) until it pops up and then releases the rest of the glass to allow it to move the rest of the way back. I have tried to buy just the clip, but it is only sold as part of the assembly, hence, when I wish to open the sunroof, I gently hold the front of the window in place while I push the button and as the back goes up, I let go and allow the glass to continue moving back. It hasn't been enough of an annoyance for me to pursue replacement through boneyards yet. The clip in the front has a small piece that toggles slightly. Apparently, as it wears, it doesn't hold the frame as tightly, leading to the problem we're all having (now that I think about it, I wonder if it isn't the handle at the front fo the glass that has worn!). I've tried grease, I've tried to clean all of the grease out and then reapplied white lube, I've even tried duct tape and WD-40! |

If you look at the sides where the glass attaches to the rail grove, you'll notice that as the rail piece moves back, it lifts the glass and moves it back all in one motion. What I think, is that the little piece that lifts/moves the glass has a difficult time lifting it, and so it just tries to push it back. I know its confusing, but take a look and it'll all come clear. I'm still unsure how to deal with it. I've tried to grease it up really well to help it lift the glass first, but it hasn't worked. Its really irritating. Its the only thing on the rig that doesn't work properly, but I'd rather not take it into the dealer to fix. |

The problem is with the rail assembly, the cheap plastic parts have failed which causes the roof to tilt then retract.Atlantic-British offer replacement rails for $ 50 each(pair) the bad part is the job is a real pain,on a D1 you must remove the entire headliner assembly the rails mount from the bottom with tork screws.Other than the headliner the remainder of the job is easy.Be sure to seal the bolts and check the drain hose connections or more water will come inside than down the drain. |
