i have an adventure rack on my disco and am looking for a kayak rack that is compatable with it. in the past, i have jusr strapped the boat on there but would much rather use some type of a kayak holder. does anyone know if thule or yakima will work? any suggestions would be great. thanks for the help. tim

I think both Thule and Yak will make adapters that will work with the Adventure if you want to add cross bars. Are you looking for kayak saddles or the kind that lets your lash two kayaks on their side?

I also have a facotory rack on my Discovery and went with the Marco Kayak Saddles. I went to a local kayak place and they we tested it first and saw it fit great. You would neet the tube adapters that would be used if you were using if for like a Thule rack or something. The thule tube and the rover bars are very similar in size. Also the saddles look great and support and hold down the kayaks well. I am able to get four saddles on the vehicle to hold two kayaks. They mount on the highest points on opposite ends of the rack. I think for two saddles it runs between 60 and 100 dollars. The number I found for Marco saddles was 888-923-4600 or 727-734-0924.

just a word of warning offrovn - those factory crossbars are known to detach themselves from the rigidly-mounted rails that are bolted to the roof. If you're mounting your kayaks ONLY to the crossbars, you might want to put some backup lashing onto the rigidly-mounted rails.

Blue,
I'm not sure if were on the same page. I'm not quite sure I know which bars you are talking about. I don't just set them there, I tie them down securely, but I'm not sure what you mean by backup lashing?

you're talking about stock roof rack, right? The main part of the stock rack is the rails that are hard-mounted to the roof of the Disco. Then there are the 3 cross-bars that slip into the rails with those two little pegs at each end. What I'm saying is that those little pegs tend to slip out of their respetive holes. If you kayak is only mounted to the crossbars, and if the crossbars detach, then adios kayaks.

This is an important question. I was hoping to install a cradle system for a sea touring kayak.

Blue,
I don't know if this answers your question but I may have confused you by not being clear. I meant the factory genuine land rover adventure rack, the large metal one.

oh, that's a completely different story. that's about as secure as you can get.

If you put the expanded steel flooring on your roof rack, not only will the rack be more functional but you wull also be able to bolt any tyle of holder to the floor.

I was thinking of the kayak question as well since I already have the Yakima saddles and rollers. My plan is to have a fron piece fabricated that is basicly two little triangles, one for each end of hte bar, and then grab an actual Yakima cross bar and weld it together. Then you can use the Yakima attachments, those little things that loop overthe bar and have a hole for the screw, to attach that piece to the side rails of the Adventure rack. After that you attach you saddles to the front Yakima bar and attach the rollers directly to the back bar of the adventure rack (adding in some padding if those clap things don't have an ID that matches the racks OD) and voila!! all better.

The reason I'm thinking of having a piece made is:
1. I suck at welding and would most likely kill myself and everything within 2 miles in a horrible fire.
2. To raise the front Yakima cross bar to the same height as the back of the a-rack. this way you aren't putting any bend or stress on the kayaks.

And Blue, with any rack you should always tie the kayaks directly to the vehicle as well as the rack because traveling 70MPH down the road makes those kayaks turn into something of a sail. I've seen a waterbed come off the top of a car before because it wasn't tied down to the car, and it wasn't pretty.

hope that helps. If I get this thing fabricated I'll post pictures. It's pretty simple really.

I mount my Yak rollers and saddle to my Adventure rack. Same as if they were actual yak cross bars. The only problem you find is that the mounts for the yak stuff are a little larger in diameter than the piping for the adventure rack. I cured this by wrapping some electrical tape around the bars until I got a tight fit after clamping down.

Easy to do. This is for a sea kayak.

Do you havea picture with a kayak on top. After taking a second look I realize I don't need to make a front part as long as the kayak doesn't "nose down" too much over the hood.
I usually carry a 17' and a 15'.

Peter, I don't have a picture handy. But I can assure you. I have a 15' Wilderness systems sealution and it does not "bow dive" over the hood. The difference in the roof line is only a few inches from front height to back.

Great thanks! Then I'll stop being lazy and do it myself.
