Well, the secret got out. The Tire Rack used to sell the steel wheels for the DSII (16x7) for $49.99. Last year, they sold out in a hurry. This is the exact wheel that is sold through another LR parts supply house for around $99. I just spoke with Tire Rack. The wheel is not available and has been discontinued. No longer available. Period! Looks like the supplier decided to route all of the product to the more expensive supplier. That really sucks!!!

I wonder who, because I bought the very last one that TireRack had last year (they threw in lugs and a tire tool all for $49) and now I use it for a spare rim. I bought 4 others from AB and it's a totally different wheel, backspacing is much less.

Hmmm. That's strange. I was thinking that AB sold the identical wheel. Seems someone purchased the TireRack wheels and then compared them to a friend's that were purchased elsewhere for alot more and they were the same wheel, even down to the manufacturer's stamp. Anyway, the sad part is we no longer have a reasonable source for steel wheels.

Mike, not to be a pain, but can you tell me the two different backspacings of those wheels. I'm curious to know the measurements.

Greg:
Yeah, that's what I thought too until I actually received the wheel. I'll measure tomorrow, but here's a front view pic of both. Also, the tirerack wheel(right) is 16x8 and the AB wheel is 16x7.

Michael, What size tires are on the AR wheels do you have mounted on the vehicle in that picture.

Kyle, is there such a thing as a NATO wheel for the D2?

I have the Tire Rack steel wheels, and I noticed that they have a date code stamped on them from 1997, so they appear to be originally for the classic new Range Rover (or whatever the '94-'02 thing is called).

Michael - are you sure the Tire Rack wheel is a 16X8? I'm almost positive mine are 16X7.

Kyle:
You're saying AR on the right? Well, that's the one that came from Tirerack.

Al:
The tire/wheel on the truck is the 16x7 wheel from Atlantic British with 265/75 Dunlop Rover RTs. I recently moved the RTs to stock 16x8 alloys and have put 245/75s on the steel wheels.

I now have the spare Rover RT on the Tirerack wheel and it fits much better with air above 35psi:

Dean Brown has the tire rack ones on his D2. You can check them on his gallery here. Same ones as the spare above...

Okay, I measured this AM:

The AB wheel (which does look like the AR wheel) is 16x7 with about 4 1/2 - 4 3/4 bs. As you might expect, this one sticks out a bit.

The Tirerack wheel is 16x8 with 5 1/2 - 5 3/4 bs which I think is close to the stock alloys.

Personally, I like the look of the AB wheel better plus it seems like it's made a little heavier.

Hmmm. The plot thickens. I had never heard of a TireRack wheel being 8 inches wide until now. I wonder if they switched suppliers near the end?

They must have. I recall the guy telling me that they had a very hard time getting these wheels and he couldn't even commit to when they would get another shipment in (this was last year, almost a year ago). He would only say "sometime next year", which apparently never materialized.

Anyway, it's definitely an 8" wheel. When I had the 265/75s on the 7" rims, they really bowed up into a visible dome at road pressures. At the same psi on the tirerack rim, they're almost flat across.

If I am not mistaken the DI carries a generic GM bolt pattern. If thats the case that might very well be just a GM wheel.....

The DII pattern is 5x120 mm (4.7244"). GM equivalent is 5x4.75 (120.65mm). Some late model Camaros and Impalas used 16x7's in this size. Not an exact fit, but pretty damn close. They have been used successfully on a DII.

I have the AR wheels that look like the AB wheels in Michaels photo but mine are 16x8 and the back spacing were too much for the 265/75's. They were great with 245/75's.

Yeah, Kevin Collins was running those GM wheels on his D2. I think he said these came off a camaro, but I'm not 100% sure.

Yep, that was it. From the photo looks like the shot was taken just after the fatal "dunk".

What happened? Did he ingest water? What's all that underneath, oil?

Sank it during a water crossing. Engine drowned out. He attempted to start it while it was still under water. Hydro-locked the engine. Insurance company totalled it.
