I know this sounds crazy, Im considering trading in my 97 D1 for a 95, I really like the 3.9 engine compared to the 4.0; is this a wise idea or should I stick with the 97 it has 90k

I have a 95. Even the dealer admits the '95 suck! Mine has had so many problems!

Hey Tim.Uhm!!!4.0 or 3.9.well go for 3.9 is a reliable engine.thats my opinion.i heard alot of people having problems with 4.0 then 3.5 or 3.9. 3.9 is easier to maintain . i have 1995 3.9 with 132k miles on, is strong very strong. i have few modifications under the hood.like mallory unilite distributor, high out put coil from mallory, K&N round filter, magnescor wires ect.hope helps.if you have any ? email me.

My 3.9 has been solid 108k miles and any mechanic can work on it sine it's a Buick engine.

Sounds like a good idea, Tim. If you can find one that has been well maintained, it'll keep you happy.

Do non-LR mechanics really have that much trouble with the engines in the 96-98s?

I have a 94 with the 3.9 that has 248,000 miles on it. THE ONLY THING THE ENGINE HAS NEEDED IS A WATER PUMP! It runs great, uses no oil, and has many miles left in it. The 3.9 is simple, has adistributor and other trail friendly things. It is a lot like the old Buick 215, so most mechanics don't play the "it's a complicated fureen car, 40% markup on repair work" game on you. Go for it...

And on a similar note, I am thinking of selling my 2000 DII to get a 94-98 DI. My wife is quitting her job to give real estate a go. Since real estate is commission based it will take her 6 months to a year to start making decent money. That means both of us on my salary, and she makes good money now, so it will be a tough adjustment. Thus, my monthly payment is going to get steep and I need to look for a more affordable truck.

I want to stay with the Disco of course, but am not sure of the year. Ideally I am looking at a 97 or 98 with 70k or less miles. I do have a friend though with a 96 with a 103k who is thinking of selling. I know the 96s are rumored to have valve problems, but he babys his truck. He is very meticulous and it never would have even occured to him to have taken it off-road, don't hold that against him ;). With a 96 in great condition but high miles, can I really depend on it as a reliable daily driver for another 3-4 years?

I owned a 98 and now I own a 95 Disco. Love the 95 much more. It is indeed a much easier engne to work on. My 95 has 114k on it and it is a strong engine. The only serious job it ever need was a tune up. go for it man.

They all seem to have valve problems, yes I know there are exceptions. Mine had them and is a 1997 and I have talked to numerous other people with all different years who have had the same problems.

Jason -

If he had it since new and stuck with it that long, chances are it is a "good one". If he is a good friend, hopefully he wouldn't screw with you. Sounds like the perfect opportunity. Heck, offer him to trade up, and you trade down. Sounds like a match made in heaven.

Jason, find out if your friend had the valve problem and/or repair. If not, you might be in for it. Think about that first.

tim, why trade? you haveing problems with the 4.0? grass isn't always greener you know...

i hear tons of problems comminf from the 1995 model year, all sorts of crays quirks.

hoiwever most people agreee the quality of the '97 is generally the best.
