I've just learned that I need a new cat. I've checked the archives and see that people have used Summit Racing. Any experience? They seem to be waaaayyyyyyyy cheaper, any drawbacks??? I have a '95 disco, does it just have one cat? What are the advantages of cutting off the resonator? Thanx for the help!

absolutely zero drawbacks for the last 10K miles on my rrc - i have two summit cats and no resonator. No respectable LR would still have that clunky thing hanging off the back of it's south end!

summit cats x2 plus installation was $300. that's chebby territory.

cheers,

isaac

Make sure you get hi-flow cats. If you change your mufflers to flowmasters, your truck will sound meaner.

I have used these cats before (Summit). They are made by Catco and start in the Summit catalog at $59.95 each. They are universal fit, hi flow cats. Don't call Summit and order for a Disco, 'cause they don't have a listing. Get your pipe size, order and get a muffler shop to install. Should not be too expensive. You need two of them. You will have better luck having an independant shop to install. Whatever you do, don't pay the $1100-1200 Rover Stealers want for a Y pipe and cats, its criminal.

JRoc, they are 2 1/4 inch cats. I plan on buying one and having it installed at a shop behind Shea stadium. Let me know if you are going to order them and I'll take you to the shop in Flushing to have them installed.

John sorry I haven't been in touch with you guys, I've been really swapped with work. I'm definately going to Killington though, hope to speak with you guys soon. Will post the results with the cats.

Nick, I don't remember the name, it's been a while since I've been there. I had a cat welded (on my Jeep) a few years ago and they were cheap. It wasn't a fancy shop, just a small dingy inexpensive place (like all the shops behind the stadium). I know it's right around the corner from Clearway. Good luck.

Are you sure they aren't 2" diameter? I just ordered two from Summit and are going to get them installed tomorrow. They guy at summit told me if I had a 2" O.D. on my exhaust (which I do) to get the 2". I guess I'll find out tomorrow...
Also, you have the choice between 12" or 14" or 16". I got the 12", because that's how long the existing ones are. Turns out the Catco ones are 12" INCLUDING the flanges. That makes the actual cat converter shorter than factory. I'll report back here when I see if it all works.

Where are you located? I just recieved my Cat and am looking to have it installed tomorrow as well. I'm in the New York area.

Hey guys,

Here's the update. I ordered Summit Racings Cat, the company that makes it is called Catco. Catco cats are sold elsewhere also, just so you know. The part I ordered is 6005 and it was 14"s. My '95 Disco has two cats, drivers side and passenger side. The one that was bad was the passenger side. That one is sort of oval shaped, like a muffler, and is mounted horozontally. The other one, drivers side, is round and has the intake and the output centered. The passenger side has the intake in the middle and the output is sort of offset towards the lower part of the cat. When I recieved my Catco cat (universal fit) it had the intake and the output mounted in the middle. At first I didn't think it would work, but it turns out it worked fine.

I took it to my friend around the corner from where I live, who helps me out from time to time by either doing the work for me in his shop, or letting me use his shop (My tools). He looked at it and said it didn't look like it would fit, so I was gonna return it and see if they had a model that was offset on one end. They didn't. I looked up muffler shops and found this place in Long Island New York that said they had experience installing cats in Disco's. It's called American Muffler Shop in Westbury Long Island. It's located on Old Country Road and Steve (one of two owners) was very pleasant and knowledgable. When I called up he said he'd charge me a little over $200 but when I got there he saw I had the Catco universal cat and said he'd use that one and only charge me $80 to install it. All said and done it only cost me $155. That includes buying the cat from Summit Racing, Shipping, and having Steve's place put it in. If anyone is interested the phone number is (516)333-8228 and either Steve or his brother/partner Mitch can help you. Mention Disco Web and tell him John with the white Disco sent ya. Good Luck all and hope to see everyone at Killington this coming weekend.

Just a side note, the cat that I ordered was part number 6005 and it included a tube on one side. This is not correct for a '95 Disco and there is another one that is exactly the same without the tube. Steve's guys just cut and welded the tube shut for me so it wasn't a problem, but just a little FYI. And the 14" size worked just fine.

Did you not read my article before you ordered? I wrote about all this 2 years ago.

Perrone,

Could you post a link to that?

He did read it P. For whatever reason he got the wrong cat but it worked anyway. I also ordered the same part but I got the right one.

John, I did not need to have the cat installed to pass emmissions. I'll tell you about it on the way up to Killington.

Anyone need a Cat CT-6905? Brand new, never used.

Trevor, here it is:

Great write up on the cat install.

I read the article as well, and my question was will the same cats work on Perrone's RR as my Disco? I would guess so, but you never know. In JRoc's defense, there was no mention of that. I've bought two of the 12" cats from Summit because they are slightly smaller, and was also worried about the offset. I figured a decent muffler shop could modify the inlet pipe to make it work. Glad it worked out. I guess I'll get around to replacing mine sometime...

LOL, Yeah I read your article Perrone, I just wasn't sure what vehicle it was written for (Range/Disco). I tried finding out what vehicle the writer of the article drove but I couldn't even figure out who wrote the article. Great article and website though, it was very informative and made me feel like it could be done. That bit of info helped to save me a bundle of money! I look forward to meeting you one day and buying you a beer, or whatever your beverage of choice is. And thanx again John (Rangie), I'll take care of your beverage this weekend.

Sorry, I need to modify that dang thing so that it says Rangie Classic. But I seriously doubt that LR would use different exhaust tubing sizes on the different models. Of course, all you would really need to do is measure the O.D. of the pipe and see if it matches.

But if you want to buy me a beer, it's certainly be appreciated. My favorite is Chimay, but I'm enjoying a Guinness as I type this!

I have a question about these cats since over this past weekend I started getting the error code for the bad cat. The shop I talked to knows about the LR problems with the cats and was just worried that the summit ones were not ODB2 compliant. Does anyone know if they are or not? He quoted me $250 to do the pass. side cat if he supplies or $70 to place on the Summit one. I am planning on doing both since I am sure the drivers side will be the next to fail.
Thanks again for the help!
