I saw this on British Pacific website. Is this true?

"Using the right filter on your Land Rover is very important. Many chain stores are not selling the right one: Rover V8's require an anti drainback valve, and most filters being sold for the application don't have it. This could result in cam and lifter damage."

Rover filters have an anti-drain back valve. Make sure that any aftermarket filter you may purchase has one as well. Rover oil pumps have been known to loose their prime when allowed to sit a long time empty.

question on the anti-drain back bit. can you tell by looking at a filter if it has this? K-Mart was having a sale on oil filters last night, and by the brand parts catalog, they have the correct one, but the box does not say if it has the anti-drain back valve. It is a Castrol Max Pro or somesuch.

NAPA Gold, WIX have anti-drainback. It's been said that filling a new filter with oil before replacing it will prevent loss of prime.

Also, the K&N oilfilters have anti-drain back.

Robbie,

I have been using the Castrol ones for quite some time (2 years+) with no problems.

K-Mart was going out of business, bought a shitload of them for 50 cents each.

You can test it.
Its not a very scientific method but works. Put the centre srew hole to your lips and try to inspirate through it or blow air into it. You will notice the difference.

can you not get an original part? over here an original part oil filter is just under £6 (UK) for either a V8 or a tdi filter. :-)
