I was thinking about buying an extra set of rear half-shafts for my D2 from the dealer. I've already broke one and I don't want to get stuck some where with a broken axle. So, I started reading up on changing a half-shaft on a D2 on my Rave CD. Holy shit! The shaft is held into the hub w/ one nut which they call a stake nut. So, I go to the torque section and it's tightened to 360 Pounds! Holy Shit! I hope you eat your Wheaties that day. That is insane! Does anybody have a 12 foot breaker bar they'll loan me? Well, I guess I won't be changing any half-shafts on the trail. Oh well! I'll just have to go 2 wheel drive This is the first time I've really felt like the D1 is better for off-roading. I've always felt like the D2 could be modified to do anything the D1's can, but damn! I'd have to have custom axles built to overcome that flaw. Hopefully, someone will build some HD shafts soon. Hey Greg, They exist, call Great Basin Rover's. Talk to Bill. I'm installing them this weekend, along with a new drive shaft... Frank |

Frank are the shafts you're talking about just HD shafts or do you replace the hub to somehow make it field repairable too? I Have yet to brake one but I worry about every time I go out. I really like the axles on the D1/RC/D90's. That's the only thing that makes me wish I had an older Disco. |

Yeah, I was wondering that too. HD shafts are good and all, but if you break one, you're still screwed on the trail. But, Hey, at least they won't break as often as a LR shaft. A full floating kit like the D1 would be real nice! Greg |

I don't think you can modify the hub. That's why I'm putting in the HD half shafts. I running TT's front and rear with 4.11 from GRB. It's a great set-up, haven't broke a half shaft yet, but I probably just jinxed myself. It's a pain in the butt to change the axle in a shop, I'd really don't want to change one on the field... Hi guys.I just installed TTs front and rear,4.1 gears and rear HD axles from bill great Basin. I have something strange and different after installing the TTs. I always had an easy time locking and unlucking the diff lock on my DII until the TTs and gears went in.I did not 4wheel the truck since the mods, but yesterday when I decded to lock the cener diff on the street just to exersize the system,I found out that still locks esily and fast ,but unlocking it was impossible nomatter how far I drove (15-20 blocks numerous times),and all the tricks and tries it would not unlock unless I stoped and reversed for about 40 feet. Too much wind up and bind due I guess to the TTs. I then decided to try that on a hard to find dirt road section and although longer than normal I was able to unlock the center diff going forward without reversing. I now wonder if there is a problem with any of the true TTs that causing to much wind up with the center diff lock locked or others like Mongo experienced difficalty (almost impossible ) to unlock diving forward on good traction paved road. I have not gone 4wheeling yet since the mods so maybe the TTs need to be broken in wheeling to loosen up. I did put about 1000 miles of regular driving since the mods. I talked to bill about it but he is not sure aboutit and he try to find out from TT whats is the story. In the mean time I like to know oif anyone with TTs front and rear .Or DL and TT combo DI or DII have ever experience that or givr it a try on paved road and check if he has difficalties unlocking the center diff moving forward without reversing.Geirge Saitanis |

I have about 10k on my TT's and have never had a problem...cdl locks and unlocks like before I did the TT install...interesting...I'd check the backlash and pinion angles and the condition of the universals, but I had a thunk/vibration lately and need to change a front universal. But never a problem with the cdl...keep us informed on what you find... Frank |

FWIW, I've always found that it's good practice to reverse a few feet (10-20) when unlocking the CDL even if the light goes out. |

George, I have Det & TT and used them for the first time this past weekend. Never had any problems at all unlocking my CDL. After jsut a few feet going forward, the light would go out. P.S.- How are those Pro Comp Xterrains working out? Had them in the mud yet? How are they on the street? |

If you lock it on the street and move anywhere you are gonna have a bitch of a time unlocking it.. Its a transfer case thing... Kyle |

It does seem like the CDL is tougher to disengage ever since I put the TTs and 4.1s in. I find myself having to go back and forth a lot more than I did before. chu |

Kyle,Locking the cdl on the street and unlocking it going forward was easy before I put the TTs in. You are saying that your truck with DL/TT is impossible to unlock om the street going forward without reversing? Graig I used the Xterrain procomp tire out west and performed great, did not use it in mud yet.. Frank, did you ever lock the CDL on the street and try to unlockit driving forward after a couple hundred feet?Maybe you check it this way and see if it behaves different. Thanks guys. George |

Well you were lucky ,if you lock any 4x4 on asphault its gonna wind up simply because of tire circumference differences... Kyle |

Let us know how you make out Frank. I'm interested in how much of a PITA it is to press fit the axles into the hub. |

I get some difficulty disengaging CDL on hardpack and rock surfaces. If and when it happens I just drive a little further and try to lift a wheel or hit some slippery surfaces and it unlocks much easier. Frank, hope the HD install goes well. Please keep us updated. With all of the creaks and groans I get offroad I know mine is probably coming sooner that I anticipated Curtis |

I did find a dirt road about 1/4 mile long and the CDL did unlock going forward without too much hassle. I guess you get a lot more windup in the system with TTs front and rear thats why I was able to unlock withoit difficulties before the TTs went in. Frank ,I noticed that dricing forwrd a few feet to get the center diff to lock and then unlocking it soon after it is esier. But if you accelarate and drive about ablock on the street then the system gets all wound up and then the unlocking the CDL without reversing is extremely hard ,if not impossible. Maby with some wheeling and some more mileage the system will loosen up some .George |
