I have aquired an x-9 winch which winches in fine but will not winch out, I have to knock it into free spool and manually pull it out. . Any ideas ? Maybe a bad solenoid. Thanks for any ideas or links to winch help pages. |

Is this on a SG bumper by any chance? Reson I ask is that I've seen it happen before and I hear it's common. But it could also happen on other mounts. Try and loosening the bolts on the foot of the winch where it mounts to the bumper and see if that works. Sometimes if the foot isn't flush it will cause problems. |

JB I would say its time to take the winch apart and clean it. Not enough detail when you say you have to "knock it into free spool" but those things are pretty simple inside. I took mine apart and cleaned it all up and it works much better now (brushes were sticking). Also, be sure all the bolts holding it into the bumper are tight and its not "tweeked" I need to shim one side of mine because it will not free wheel real well because the drum is rubbing the motor housing. Also, I have a full diagram of the winch if you want a copy (Adobe Acrobat) send me an email. |

I had the same problem on my SafariGard bumper. Seems the mounts were not flush. So when the winch was mounted to the bumper, the spool would bind and not spin freely. Someone else on the Discoweb gave me the solution too, so I'll pass it on. I loosed all of the bolts and it began to free spool just fine. I bought stainless steel washers to shim the winch. The washers went between the bumper mount and the bottom of the winch. I had to do a bit of trail and error, but it now free spools just fine. I had to shim 3 of the four bolts to get it to work. Email me if you have questions. Thanks, Mike B. |

You should just need to shim it. |
