here are a few pics as of this afternoon of the new bumper. it is 1/4" steel 2X6's. it will be directly welded to the leading edge of the frame rails just above the hitch. there will also be a few added 'tabs' towards the end of the bumper where it will be welded also.

the top will be covered with 1/8" steel diamond plate and taper over the top edge of the bumper. the ends where the old plastic bumper end caps were will be similar in location and design, but of course using 1/8" or 1/4" steel.

i have not added the 1/4 panel protection along the sides until i really know how and where to do it without making a mess of the 1/4 panel and wheel well area. but the design is as such so i can add that later.

will also be adding a 1" steel bar parallel to the bumper that will start/end about 6" from the end of the bumper. it will stick out an inch or two beyond the spare to help reduce the risk of poping out the rear window and trashing the tailgate.

more pics to be added tomorrow along with the finished bumper, which will hopefully be by the end of the week.

Did you ever own a 1st generation Montero? The diamond-plate on top of the rear bumper was a nice touch on those old Montys.

only have had Discoverys, VW's and J**Ps in my past. the idea came as i was remembering what i was going to use on my wilderness rack. except the diamond plate on the rack would be aluminum and the top plate for the bumper would be steel of course.

i guess that vegas pic #3 could be used for lots of 'slogans'. for bumpstops, bumpers (front and rear), pushbars, headlights (high beams only!!!), dubs (aka alloys), etc.

i guess i could be on to something, but my brain wave activity would not be able to control all the data and research that i would assumingly have to gather.

finished bumper pics are now posted to the below link. http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/g_porterfield/lst?.dir=/Rover+Bumper&.view=t

still not fully complete, but for now this is where i am leaving it.
weighs about 90-100 lbs. may be switching out my OME MD rears for HD's.
looks pretty shiny too, but the paint was still a bit wet.

i will take better pics when i get it back home or to the office tomorrow or this evening.

anyone know the best way to get rid of the fast blinking light, since i have removed the tail lights in the bumper? some kind of relay?

now stop peeking at those vegas pics and get to work!!!

:)

better pictures have been posted this morning of the finished bumper. ken....i would like to take fully credit, but my welding skills are '0'. some local boys down the street at Miller Welding get the credit for making my drawings something real. even at that.......we made changes along the way that made more sense as we went.

all in all i got a very stout bumper for under $500 installed. it is not a beauty queen by any means, but simple and strong it is.

I saw the ones this morning. Nice job. Well, you designed it for the most part, so you should feel good about that.

thanks. it turned out pretty decent. still a work in progress like everything else. adding a skid plate later along with 1/4 panel protection. just trying to find the best solution to both. want to see what has worked best for others without doing too much. want to keep this thing as simple as possible. i just may find out that i want to keep it just the way it is.
i feel like backing into this little toyota parked in back of me this morning to see how she works!!!

:)

That was my next question. From the QA side, it must be tested and tested again.

looks great Garret. How did you end up bolting it to the frame? It looks like you removed the old tabs for the rear bumper.

Have you tried the highlift on it?

gp (Garrett)
Posted on Friday, March 01, 2002 - 11:06 am:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

actually if you check the pics closely you can see. took the tabs off completely and welded in several places:

1) on the bottom side to the hitch.
2) on the front bottom side all along the end of the frame rail.
3) (pic rear4) additional 1/4" steel angles along side the frame rail to the new bumper.

so no bolts here. there is no way the bumper is going anywhere. unless the rest of the truck is going too.

as for taking a highlift to it.......i do not have one, so i will wait to have someone try that. more than certain it ain't gonna have any issues with it. it's overbuilt in a few ways. he went weld happy with it i think. any place the new 1/4" 2X4 touched the frame he welded it. so ever having to remove this thing is not an option.

they were not whores. porn stars.......big difference. it was the adult video convention in vegas. i spent 20 bucks at the convention.......on beers.

Somehow I think the bumper cost less than the vegas trip :)

Garrett thanks for the clarification. I obviously did not look close enough. Like you said, the bumper and the Disco are now guaranteed to move in the same direction.

The only issue I see with welding in place is if you need to repair the bumper or anything else back there. Otherwise, great design. I like the extra bar on the back too--is that strong enough to work as a recovery point?

yeah that is true about working on it in the future. since i am pretty certain somewhere along the line i will have to have some work done on it. hopefully the work will be able to be done while still on the truck. hopefully that is the case.
not sure about the beefy tubing. i would think so. it is pretty hefty for sure. but using my d shackly is the best option. we can check it out in a few weeks at the next ROVERS outing.
as for the vegas........it was just a tad more than the bumper!! haha :)

Nice one Ho. The TJM sticks to the stock lines and it looks like it would be very easy to custom a skid plate . . . and so affordable!

The $500 price is EE's price. You can get that TJM bumper for one dollar cheaper from 4x4 Connection.
