If you're looking to transmit/communicate far "reliably" and legally try another radio service. Or do you really need CB? If you're going with CB spend money on the antenna and a good installation. The antenna will give your more return on investment than the radio ever will. |

AL, When I say Far I don`t mean 100`s of miles I mean maybe 10-20 miles. I`ll need to beable to talk back and fourth between a base camp or to a state forest HQ. I don`t want a cell phone because it will serve me no use when wheeling with my friends that don`t have them but have CB`s. What antenna do you sugest?? |

I use a Firestik. I don't know about the range. With my CB vehicle to vehicle I can't get near 10 miles. But if you're talking to a good base you might be able to do it. From what I hear the Wilson 5000 is a very good antenna. You may want to look into that one. Check out... http://www.popularwireless.com/ in the CB forum. |

I have K40 cb and 4' antenna , they work great. Most people I know use Cobra cb's and Firestik antenna's. What it comes down to is getting the lowest reflection rate, what I mean is buy a SWR meter. Tim |

I've gotten 8-10 miles on my CB without an external booster, but the power has been turned up internally. I also have both a 3' and a 5.5' K40 antenna. Both tuned professionally. I use a good Cobra CB. But the person who suggested spending the real money on antenna and tuning was absolutely right. |

Jeff, is the forest HQ only on CB? Since you're looking for 10-20 mile range you may want to look into another service if that's an option. Generally CB will get you up to 5 miles reliably. Given favorable conditions you can get more, much more but it's like trying to get your voice to echo over a valley. You might be able to do it but don't count on it. As PerroneFord said he could get 8-10 miles but with the power boosted and that is still short of the 10-20 miles you're looking for. You may want to look into a good mobile GMRS radio if that's an option with the forest service. And lots of people on the trail now use FRS radios. With a GMRS you'll still be able to talk to the people on the trail that use FRS and get reliable range of 10-25 miles (or more with a repeater). |
