Guys, I am about to buy a rear access ladder for my D2. I noticed that AB and others sell two. One is a "Genuine LR Ladder" and the other is not "Genuine". The non-genuine is $60 cheaper. Is it worth it to get the "Genuine". AB says they both rust. AB says the genuine requires a bigger rivet mount on the bottom. BW |

I've heard that the non Genuine ones rust sooner than the OEM. |

My spare tire is my ladder. If I need to access my rack from the side, I just stand on the RT slider. Paul |

Paul... I did the same for a long time. I went with an OEM ladder when I got tired of not having something to grab onto to pull myself up onto the bumper so my ladder is more of a grab handle than a ladder. IMO it's still worth it. |

I have the AB version. It is identical to the original ladder, except it uses tap screws instead of rivnuts. Easier to install in my opinion and I have had no trouble with mine. |

I understand. A grab handle would be nice. |

What sort of finish is on the AB ladder? Just curious. I'd like to pick one up in the future and like the lower price for obvious reason. I also have a source who can powder coat for me for free on occasion. Todd |

As I said earlier, I have the AB version, and I have looked at it probably 100 times this weekend while working on my CB install. The side tubes are round, and the steps are square tube. So, it's a combination of the two types. Don't know if the genuine is the same, but I like the square (flat) steps. I don't use it all the way up, but it makes a nice step and hand hold, and I usually go to the spare tire as soon as I get high enough to easily step to it as it doesn't torque the door as much as the ladder which is at the extreme end of the door. For the cost, I would buy the AB ladder again. it takes me 5 minutes to take it off and apply paint if the finish ever needs it. Install was a no brainer, and it is much cheaper. |
