How do I go about removing the door panel on my 97 disco so I can try to fix the window?

go to the auto parts chain store and buy a door trim removal tool for $13. take the arm rest off and undo the screw on the inner door handle. stick the door trim removal tool behind the panel and pop the clips loose, work your way around the panel.

I have the same problem, The long metal strip came up with the window in which I had to hand pucs the window the rest of the way up. This weekend I hope to try to fix it.

Check your switch first. Mine wouldn't go up because of a dirty/clogged switch.

mine wouldn't go up because of the crappy plastic rollers. They break way to easy.

A couple week's ago one of the plastic rollers in my driver's door went. When I pulled the regulator out not only was one or them broke but the other showed a crack. Plus, when the window went down on the broken wheel (before I knew) the regulator gear came out from the motor. On top of all that the bottom slide (the part the wheels are in) looked to have a slight bend.

There are some fantastic tips on DWeb about replacing those wheels, but I didn't want to mess around trying to match a wheel and still risk future probs w/ the old regulator. I ordered a new one from AB and with a gift certificate I had it only cost me about $50 and I had it in two days.

I wish I would have taken a picture of it before I installed because I don't think it used the same weak wheel-based slide. If I remember correctly it had more of a box-type slide. It was a rainy week and I needed to use the Rover for work the next day and I was pretty anxious to get it installed so I didn't think to pull out the camera. :-( I exercised the pivot points for a few minutes before installing it to be sure it was all limber and didn't put any unneeded strain on the motor ($200+ for that). The install was a breeze and only took about 10 minutes counting putting the panel back on. Plus, I only killed two trim pins in the process!

I had one of the plastic rollers break on me, so I went to the dealer and bought a new assembly. I got home only to find that they had given me the assembly for the wrong door. In any case, I took the roller the the hardware store and bought a steel washer with the same diameter. I slid the washer into the track and then put the pivot from the old roller in the hole in the washer (It will hold itself in place). That was two years ago and the window still works fine.

My window will roll down but when I hit the botton to go up it won't. (moter only goes one way?) Is this the same problem you had? If so how did you fix it?

FInally got around to fixing the window (motor was fine but the gears were off track) What a pain in the @#$. Thought it was fine until this morning when I cracked the window to smoke a cig i heard a loud pop---friggin thing came off track again! There any way to prop something under the track to hold the window in place until I have the cash to by a new window assembly for this money sucking beast that I bought?

I had the same problem, there's a stop that should prevent that. My gear actually fell apart cause the shitty welds failed. You can use pop rivets, bolts, or weld the thing back on if you have to. As a replacement stopper on mine I just used a very short screw in the pre-existing hole and the regulator has been fine ever since.
