Well a question for everyone out there that has dealt with the fuel pump in a Disco. I had mine go out today about 3 miles from the house after running all day fine. Nothing to make me worry about problems until I shut it off to go get a hair cut. I came back out and she would not start. I gave it a few min and nothing happened so I started looking it over. Low pressure in the fuel rail. I checked the cut off switch and the fuse. No problem there. I then went to the back and removed the carpet and checked for voltage going to the pump itself with just a test light. No voltage there.. I did a jumper over to the pump with a good wire and still no pump. Well since I was waiting on the girlfriend to make it back with her car and I did have my tools there with me.. the pump came right out. Once again I checked it and no luck trying to run the pump off an external lead. Ok so it is a bad pump but should I be looking for anything else while I am at it? The no voltage part while it was still in worries me. Yes I did look in the archives and there have been several mentions of the fuel relay but nothing specific that I could find. Most everything stated to replace the pump. TIA.. DonC 96SE7 |

How many miles on your rig? Have you ever changed the filter, it saves wear and tear on the pump. |

Opps should have posted it. 99.5K on her now. Fuel filter done yearly (ok ok so I might be a bit anal about that but hey only $5 insurance as I see it) Don. |

Have you checked the cut-out switch under the bonnet? The one that is activated in case of an accident? Joey |

Already checked. Looked good. I just got the Disco towed home (about 3 miles thank god) and pulled the pump totally apart. I followed the instructions based on this link: http://www.rangerovers.net/repairdetails/fuelpump.htm I can see a slight burn mark on the connection the the pump itself. The upper connection (the one you can see when the pump is still in the car) does not have this problem. Well the bushings are worn down quite a bit so I know it will need either new bushings or a new pump. I am planning on replacing the entire pump after finding those marks on the pump itself. I am just still bothered by the lack of voltage to the pump when I tested it in the car. Oh well giving up for the night. Thank God I live about 200 meters from work. Looks like the Disco becomes a Garage Queen for the next week. |

Don, Ive just gone through the exact same problems with my 96Disco. The burnt loom isnt actually burnt. Its just the yellow covering thats burnt. Pull this apart and clean the contacts as a first precaution. Next clean the contacts on the fuel pump throughly. The main reason the loom get that burnt look is due to the loose connection between the loom and the pump. This causes arcing at the connection. Try this (I have). At the pump bend the connectors away from each other (left to right). THis should make for a stiffer connection. When i did this it felt more positive. I also changed the fuel pump at the same time, and like you will be servicing this part yearly. Hope this helps. Ian R Melbourne, Aust. |

I just wanted to post an update on this and say thanks to everyone who gave me some advice on what to do. The pump was bad as well as the fuel temp sender. This took a bit to trace down and there is no way I could have done it without Nathan from Discount Rovers. The new fuel pump went in but it was still not working. After tracing it all the way up to the engine I found out the temp sender was also bad. During this time Nathan was taking my phone calls for help and running me though the process of where to look. When Nathan did not have the pump on hand he helped me find a place here in Texas that had one I could get my hands on in a very short period of time. Well to sum it all up Nathan has earned my deepest thanks for helping the way he did. (try about 3-5 calls a day)(sorry for the plug there for him but he has really earned my respect) Now the bad news. This latest problem has pushed the girlfriend to want a newer car, so the 96 will probably go up for sale. The good news is that it will be replaced with a D3. =-) |

Well because we just found out that though my company I have a number for the Ford X plan. The D3 is something she likes the looks of better anyhow. As for her being into the Rover, so far she goes with me to all the events and has a blast. No complaints from me about the D1 though since it is pretty easy to maintain that is why I am still deciding to keep it or not. |

Hi, I have a problem.....my disco right hand drive manual v8 3.9 '96 has just clapped out on a hill approx 3kms from home. Maybe i should not have driven home the same way out just to fool Prince Lucas. I have not worked on the disco before apart from an alternator. I've got no spark, the fuel pump is whizzing 3-4 seconds and there's plenty of gas in the tanks. No smell of gas and the plugs are dry after retrying to prime by switch on and off several times. I look up from the rear right hand wheel, tucked up on a frame are two white and black canisters approx 1.25 inch in diamter in black plastic tubing. One terminates just after and looks like a vent or breather. the other goes forward on plastic tubing. Is this the main fuel line and filter? both lines are empty but the cannisters blow fine. Can you guys give me some hints as to what to try next and the locations (I know where the alternator is battery dissie, etc but not the various relays and the cut off switch is nowhere where the users guide says it should be. Thanks for any help Dave |

I've recovered the disco, and in daylight I found the fuel filter on the correct fuel line in 30 seconds, DOOOOO, (it was dark and I dropped the torch). No spark at all, is there supposed to be 12 v at the coil before, when the ignition key is advanced through I and II before the starter motor is energised at III? Thanks for any help Dave |
