My 95 Disco with 5-speed has developed an annoying problem of idling up and down from 500 to 1500 RPMs when started and while sitting in traffic like it is seaching for the correct speed. Have also experienced more than occasional engine dying out when allowed to idle(such as between gear shifts and at stop lights, etc.) that is corrected only by turning the ignition completely off and restarting. Does anyone have suggestions as to the problem? Gary |

Sounds like it could be a faulty Throttle Position Sensor. Check the archives on that some good info there |

Sounds like the stepper motor(idle control valve) to me. The classic symptoms of the stepper motor going bad is: Engine dies for no reason when you are idling, you start it back up imediately and everything is fine. This is repeated maybe every fourth time you're idling. Randall |

I should add that the problem with stalling has gone on for several years and that while still under warranty, I asked the dealer to check and they suggested higher octane gas. I was being cheap and using regular. For several years now, it gets nothing but high test. I still have the stalling problem. The problem with the idle is fairly recent. Maybe the two are seperate problems? |

No. I had the exact same problems. I cleaned the stepper motor with carb cleaner and put it back in with a new fiber washer and the problem went away. Mine would idle between 500 and about 1500 rpm also. It sucked in traffic because I was afraid of ramming someone. Anyway, do as the doctor (me)prescribes. Don't cost nothin' anyway. |

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I will first try the free fix, but if that doesn't fix it, can anybody describe how you adjust the base idle? I have seen that mentioned in the archives, but admit I need more info on it. Gary |

Kingfish, I changed out the stepper motor on my old RR with a aftermarket one, because it had similar idle surge and a real rough idle. The rough idle went away but it still raced up and down. I swapped a potentiometer from a 3.9 and it worked it stayed around 800rpms. Dee |
