Man,

That's like asking who makes a better car, Bentley or Rolls Royce, and then asking if the Toyota Camry is any good...

LOL, Hey take it easy on him. Hey Nick, being that you're even considering the sears brand I'm guessing that you're talking about onroad? If so, then I'd give the lean to bilstein. OME are great on and offroad, as are bilstein's, but I'd give the billie's a slight edge over the OME's onroad. That said I'd give the OME the edge over the billie's offroad. Either one they are both great shocks and it'd be hard to make a bad decision between the two. Good Luck.

PS I notice the bilstein's are firmer then the OME's, depending on what OME's you get.

Nick,

If you can't choose between OME's and Bilsteins, you might consider the N115 and N44 shocks from Old Man Emu. These shocks feature firmer valving than the standard N45F and N44 Old Man Emu shocks, and are sort of a middle ground between the standard OME shocks and Bilstein shocks.

John Lee,
I've been waffling back and forth in my research on which way to go with OME or Billstein. Which OME springs would you team with the OME N115 & N44 shocks that you recommended to Nick on a D1 that pulls double duty as a commuter and as an offroader, only using a full size roof rack, no winch, and big loads of gear usually only in the warmer months? The rack comes off in the blustery months for lack of use and for avoidance of blowing all over the highway when commuting. I think heavy duty springs would make it too harsh a ride, so perhaps the "medium" duty is more in order. My Disco serves as daily transportation, so compromise is in mind.
Thanks,
mateu

Mateu,

HD springs don't give a harsh ride, even in unladen vehicles. But if you want MD's, they're also a good choice. Best thing to do is ride in a friend's truck that has the set-up you're contemplating. You've got to feel it for yourself and see what you like. Descriptions like "smooth", "harsh", etc. are basically meaningless.

I've got the HD springs and OME shocks, on John's advice, and the truck rides great. The reason I got them was so that when I have 4 guys, guns, dogs and stuff up top driving on washboard dirt roads the ride would be awesome, and it is. The other 300 days of the year it's just me, no rack, no bumpers and it rides better than ever, not harsh, very smooth:)

John,
I'm not waffling anymore. What about tire size in relationship to the new lift? Is upsizing from 235.70.16 a must for any handling issues?

Your handling will be fine with the 235/70's. In fact, I would think that the 235/70's will "handle" more nicely than larger tire sizes such as 245/75, 265/75, and 235/85 (my favorite of the three for a Disco1). The vehicle will be sitting lower with less sidewall flex, and you won't be as overgeared as with the taller tires.

Main problem with the 235/70's is that they look small with the lifted truck. Balance is key to a good looking truck, and tall lifts combined with small tires don't look balanced. You're basically combining white wine with red meat.
