Here's a question. I have noticed a vibration in my brake pedal sometimes when braking from high speeds. It's similar to the ABS feeling, but I've disconnected the ABS. I noticed it really bad last night when decelerating down an exit ramp which was pretty beat up. Also, this was combined with a rather pronounced pull to the right in the steering wheel. I have felt the "vibration" (for lack of a better description) before, but never the pulling. Also, I was in a hurry, so I've never taken this particular exit at so high a speed. Could this be a real problem, or just something to do with loosiong traction because of the tire bouncing on the rough road?
As always, thanks for any info...

Check your rotors. Sounds like they could be warped.

Al,
I have had warped rotors before, but on another vehicle. This feels very different. It's not a pulsing in the pedal, but more like a vibration. Hard to describe, but it feels exactly like it felt when the ABS used to activate (which never seemed right either). I always wondered if some kind of pump or power brake part could be going bad. Also, it really only happens on bumpy roads. Do you still think bad rotors, or could it be something else????
Thanks,
-Daniel

Kevin,
Anything else seem to be consistant? I really only get this on bumpy roads. For example, if I'm braking on a smooth road everything is fine. If the road becomes broken up before I stop I'll get this wierd pedal feel and pulling. It's not always there, but it can be very slight to very pronounced. It depends on my speed.

Normally only at high speeds under hard breaking but when the surface is uneven (some highways have pronounced groves). Doesn't seem to be any problems at low speeds enroute to a mtb trail.
Thanks

Check your alignment. Even if it doesn't pull at speed, a poorly aligned vehicle will pull under brakes. Later.

That's possible. I'll look at it. The only thing I think's missing is the fact that it only happend on rough roads and it can start in the middle of braking. It feels like rough roads cause on of the calipers to fail and loosen up on the rotor, thereby producing a pull. Does this make any sense at all?

In my 95 Disco, when my power steering hose come off on the highway (unbeknownst to me at the time), it pulled rather severely to the right when I stomped on the brakes for the curvy exit. Seems all that fluid finds its way directly onto the front left brake. So a moderately leaky PS system might cause that.

Daniel,

I have the same, hard to explain thing happening in my 01 D2. I took the thing to the dealer twice and finally had 4 guys, including the service manager, standing around my truck scratching their heads... the most bizarre part about my "shimmy pedal" experience was when it did just what you are talking about when i was already at a full and complete stop! (minus the pull the right ;)
Anyway, they just dismissed it as an anomaly and sent me on my way you mentioned disconnecting your ABS, which has me guessing even more than before. Keep me posted on what you find out.
