Hi, While changing the manifold on my 1997 Disco I made the observation that the motor mounts were skewed. I compared the ones currently holding the engine to new ones that I got from LR and could see a big difference in the offset. Handyman as I am I started to replace these... stubby 18 open wrenches and two jacks to get new ones in.... This is where the problem started I could not lift the engine to remove the old ones. I did not want to break anything else trying to fix this so here I am waiting to hear from anybody that has done this before. ....engine hoist? Thanks, Alex Cabrera www.geocities.com/cabrera_alex |

Be sure to remove the bottom nuts from transmission mounts before you jack up the engine. |

Thanks guys... I'll try looking at it again. I did put a 2x4 piece of wood on the length beneath the oil pan with a jack under it. This is where I decided to stop as I was afraid I might crack or break the oil pan. |

Just replaced all 4 of mine (2 engine & 2 transfer case) after the left front failed due to heat degradation (after 120 k miles)the other 4 failed in rapid sucession on the "crux" of the Blue Lakes run. Still managed another day of wheeling before I got home and surveyed the damage. The replacement process is a pain, because you have to lift the engine, trans & driveline high enough to clear both the mount and its studs. I put the bottle jack head and wood block under the solid piece of engine block metal between the rear of the oilpan and the front of the trans. No problem with this and plenty of lift to clear everything. Before you start jacking, be sure to loosen the bottom nuts on all 4 of the mounts before you replace any of them. Also, disconnect the Y-pipe from the muffler, remove the top of the engine fan cowl (2 spring clamps, like on the air filter) and the rubber intake pipe between the airflow sensor and the throttle body. Good luck. |
