How is the best way to go about rotating your spare tire onto the ground? I have about 5k miles on my set and the spare has never seen the ground. Should it go front or rear, left/right? Any hints/comments? Thanks! |

depends on your tires I only "rotate" front to rear, so that my tires always travel in the same direction (not really rotating). So if I wanted to rotate my spare into the mix, I'd have to have 2 spares so that I can drop 2 to the ground at once. I have 2 spare castor wheels, but I don't have identical tires on all 6. |

After speaking with more than one tire shop while shopping for tires... If your spare is identical to the rest of your tires, it should be rotated along with the rest of your tires. Apparently, the old fear that radial tires should not be reversed is something of a thing of the past. Until this recent shopping trip, I was of the same school as Blue. See, I can be taught! I rotate my tires from front to back and then, from left to right and then, again front to back. This is done at the direction of the tire shop where I bought my tires. I can't rotate the spare as it is a different size-I was too cheap to buy another-yes, I know what this will do to my viscous coupling. Call a local tire shop and ask them their opinion. I have been rotating my tires for the past 10-15K since I've gotten them, and except for some damage done before I trimmed the rear fenders, they all appear to be wearing similarly. I was told (again, by many tire vendors) to change my tires at EVERY oil change. In the past, I have gotten great mileage from my tires, but since I have instituted this step, I hope to do even better. Paul |

yeah, that is kind of what i thought too, but wondered if anyone had any other ideas. man, have to buy the set to have the right sizes, but then that one just sits on the rear. |

I'm not worried about changing direction, but my tire shop is. I let them do what they want - last Saturday they just slapped a brand new $130 tire on to replace one that had a huge gouge in the sidewall. Fo free. They enjoy the fact that I use the truck & tires as intended. |

I rotate my tires by putting the spare on the left rear, left rear to left front, left front to right front, right front to right rear, and right rear to spare. Whew! I guess I could have just said rotate in clockwise manner. hehe |

You DII guys, remember, you've got 5 alloys. A DI has, unless you've been swapping, 4 alloys and a steel wheel for the spare. I wouldn't remount tires just to get the spare tire into rotation, and I wouldn't run one steel wheel if the others are all alloys. If you want to swap your steel for an alloy, or, swap all of your alloys for steels, then rotate the spare, that'd make sense. For me, I just drove it....

Paul Schram is right on track with this comment, "I can't rotate the spare as it is a different size-I was too cheap to buy another-yes, I know what this will do to my viscous coupling." But he forgot to mention about the damage it would do to his flux capacitor............. |

If you rotate your spare into the mix, won't you always have one tire that is slightly larger than the rest? Seems to me that would put more strain on the diffs over time. I never rotate, and my General Grabbers (Don't laugh, I haven't gotten stuck yet... knock, knock) wear evenly. As for the spare, I rarely run it and if I do it's for less than 20 miles. Seems like a logical solution to me. Then again, I did try to my truck swim so maybe I'm not the best resource around. JR |

The difference in height caused by the "new" spare is VERY negligable. No different than having one tire 1 or 2 psi lower or higher than the others. |

that new tire I just had warrantied is about 1" larger in diameter (new tire = more tread than older tires with 20k miles). I figured that it's a good excuse to hit the trails this weekend to wear it down a bit.... |

Well, I was referring to rotating the spare in as soon as you get the tires. Therefore, the spare will be "new" but the other tires should only have 3-4K miles on them if they are rotated frequently. |

For what it's worth... I recently purchased a 1999 DII with about 40K miles on the clock. The previous owner must have never rotated the tires because, even though they were all the same brand/size, the front had WAY less tread than the rear, (think 'barely legal' in the front and '20K to go' on the back) and the spare had never touched terra-firma. I bought 5 new tires for it this weekend and the difference in handling and ride is remarkable. It's like the truck has a whole new suspension. Also, I get a lot less noise in the cab now. I can only guess that previously it was working the center diff pretty hard keeping the front and rear synched up with what really amounted to different size tires between them. After experiencing this, I'm going to be religous about rotating those rather expensive consumables. |

Yep, now see, the D2's aren't all bad. I having a new set of tires slapped on Thursday and will now perfrom the oil change interval tire rotation. Paul '00 pig |

i just had rover in for its 15k birthday. i told them i wanted the spare on the ground since as soon as this set wears out i am in for a different size set of 5 and i wanted to wear out all 5 before i get new ones. not only were they not concerned about the 15k difference in milage they were also not concerned about rotational issues. and as gun shy as most dealerships can be, if they are not worried then neither am i... |

A tip... when you are going around checking the air pressure, get the spare as well. Nothing worse than needing a spare that has only 15PSI, for those that can't inflate in the woods. |

When in college I worked summers changing tires. Though there are many seasoned professionals out there, they are not exactly pediatricians that see their patients on regular basis. Very few things will "concern" a tire changer. I would not recommend changing directions on a radial- there is a possibility of belt shifting. Just get a wheel that matches your others and a spare that will get you to the tire shop. |
