I am preparing to replace the Transmission on a '94 Disco (Manual 5 Speed). Does anyone know of any pitfalls before I launch into this?
(Should I even attempt this?)

Are you going to put in another 5 speed or an auto?

I've decided to replace this myself. I know British Atlantic have replacement Transmissions. Any other suggestions of a reputable supplier?

Don't mean to steal the thread, but has anyone put a five speed in the place of an auto? Is it easily done? Thanks. Sorry Douglas.

I don't know, if it's not an emergency, you might want to email nathan at discount rovers and see if he can get them.

Douglas, make sure you mark the bolts that connect the transfer case to the transmission in order of correct reassembly. These bolts are of different lenght, so if you put one in that is too long, its end will be sheared of by a gear and cause major damage. Are you going to put the complete assembly in one piece out? Than it will be heavy. I found it easier to take off the transfer case first.

What is wrong with the gearbox? I replaced one a while back when the fifth/reverse layshaft broke under benign conditions. Looked like it had been cut with a plasma torch, the break was so clean. If you are going to junk the 'box or break it up for spares, I'd like the shaft. Let me know if you want to sell it.

I've tried most of the places in the UK, including Ashcroft, and they don't seem to be too interested in selling just one shaft....

Thanks Jens for pointing that out about the bolts I'll keep an eye out.
I've actually got a Transmission on the way from Rover Recyclers in CA. It is rebuilt. Their web address is www.britishcarservice.com owned by an English couple. I'll keep you all posted on my progress (if anyone cares that is).
I'm undecided on what to do with the old transmission. I'll probably sell it, although it may be handy having it re-built for the future (maybe).
My old gearbox is having probs with 2nd. I can't select 2nd and if I do get it in it jumps straight back out.

Cheers

Well, a buddy and myself successfully completed the transmission swap. Several days back breaking work but it all seems worth it.

I do have one minor problem with the Differential Lock selector, it is fouling on a small nut on the top of the T/case. Anyone know the best way to 'tune' the selector so that I don't catch on this nut? Has anyone had this problem before?

Also I have a diff lock switch (that illuminates the bulb when engaged). WHat is the best way to get that correctly positioned. I am sure there is a technique...
