My 95 Disco with about 140,000 miles now has a tapping noise in the engine. Sounds like valves. Early on I had the cam button modification. Guess this is something new?

With that many miles, it could be anything. You might get yourself a mechanic's stethescope to try to narrow it down. If it's in the valve gear, you can take the valve covers off and run the motor and to find the problem.

Neal - on the 3.9's the cam will "walk" back and forth in it's bore. Makes a VERY distinctive sound and is unlike any other valve tap. Really noticeable at idle. Doesn't really hurt anything, just annoying.

You can install a cam button which is just a spacer that prevents the camshaft from moving back and forth.

The Cam button on my 95 Disco was replaced under warranty at the time. I believe it was service bulletin TEC120295 FEB 95 Engine - Camshaft Knock. See this link http://www.alldata.com/TSB/68/95680602.html for 3.9L service bulletins.

Sorry to keep asking stupid questions BUT.... How do recalls work? If I spot a recall, does it matter how many miles I have on my truck? Can recalls expire?

Cam button is like a $600 job at the dealer.

Where does the spacer go? On the back of the cam?
