I've been thinking about the whole transmission "clunk" thing (the sound that happens when shifting from Park to Drive/Reverse to Drive). How can this be natural? It doesn't sound good! It can't be good! Some Discos do it and others don't. Honestly, is there a fix?

My 98 has been doing that since I bought it. Hasn't died on me yet.. Knock on wood..

part of what makes these beasts able to get you there & back again also makes them seem a bit "clunky" to some...want silky smooth shifting? Get yoself a Cadjillac.

I own a 2002 Disco and a 1987 RR that make the same sound. I think it has something to do with the amount of built-in play in the drive train. Frankly, I have never driven or ridden in a Rover that didn't make that sound. Although the sound is a little disconcerting, neither truck has ever failed to perform as expected.
The 87(~250k miles) is a trail truck that is used regularly on trails of varying difficulty. The 02 is my daily driver,has ~4k miles and has made the sound since I took delivery. About the only difference between the two is that the 87 is a little louder. Of course with 250k miles on it, one would expect some component wear.

I've driven others both new and used that did not make the noise. It just seems like there should be a fix.

Jack, there is no fix.

a permanent 4wd truck has many more gears than a regular 2wd car, and each pair of gears must have room for thermal expansion, hence the compound slop in the drivetrain is much larger. therefore, every time you shift from forward to reverse, or even while your truck goes from engine braking to acceleration, you will hear that clunk.

i've had this clunk in two jeeps, a 4wd aerostar van, and two rovers. it was always there, more or less.
like Blue said, if you don't like it, get a Caddy.
