Can someone tell me what are the pros and cons of these two, (on and off road), mainly suspension, drivetrain, engine, etc. I know a guy that bought the exterra and thinks its the best 4x4 (dumb bastard). I'm not very tech savvy so gimme some info please or I'll just punch the sonofabitch next time I see him. |

Yeah, my neighbor has one (POS) and it's always breaking something! It's just a pick up with a 'tough' looking body. Don't even talk with him about it. It may have won Truck of the year or whatever, a few years ago, but that's because there was nothing else to compete with ! |

Kingfish , tell him like it is. If he thinks that the Xterra is better then he is obviously not qualified to make any statements comparing the two. He ialso beyond training so , maybe you should just punch him. Maybe tell him to have a look under both trucks as he is laying there.. Kyle |

Have him ask his insurance company about the X-terras. The entire front end is plastic. It is painfully common for them to be totaled due to what we would consider to be cosmetic damage. BTW-they are second only to the Subarus for insurance damage amounts. My wife went to write an estimate on one of the little Subaru wagons that had jumped a curb and flattened some bushes-totaled! |

Well, it is better at around town and street driving that's for sure. Doesn't cost as much so you have more money in your pocket.. It will at least off road better then most of the other ones (Rav-4, Honda CRV, Hignlander, and the rest of the crap) out there. So it has it's good points. And if the guy is a real good driver off road it could probably leave a Disco behind on a trail too. When you think about it.. It's really mostly the driver. However, it has front independent suspension and if you really want a laugh, go through a deep water crossing and see what happens.. The alternator is mounted almost below the engine so it will get nice and wet.. |

lol............ The first aid kit post rules......... right on Carl......... I think it may be better for bad drivers because you could total 2 of them for what my DII cost me, so theoretically, it may be better for bad drivers..... |

I've been taking a co-worker out on some trails with his XTerra. After the first run he added a 3 1/2" lift to his Xterra. Stock I would have to say it's about as good as the Jeep Liberty. It will get you places but not in and out of places your D1 will get you into given equally skilled drivers. The 3"+ lifted XTerra was more tippy than my OME lifted D2 and got hung up more. Not to mention it had more traction issues even though he had BFG MT's and I had BFG AT's. I wouldn't call it a POS (save that for the Saturn VUE) but it does have it's limitations. And as someone already said it's not as solid either in a crash or on a rock. |

The roof rack ... My friend bought an Xterra. One of the main things that he really liked/wanted/needed was a good roof rack. When he got it home and finally had a chance to examine it more closely, he was just kicking himself (and laughing at himself) for not paying closer attention to it when he was in the buying process. haha, kind of like me and the CDL I assumed was in my D2 (LOL??) I can't seem to remember the site, but about a year ago some dude on Discoweb went to an Xterra club site and bashed them for being poseurs owning Xterras (the thread was hilarious). To make a long story short, they agreed that the Disco is the superior off-road vehicle, and that Xterras have better commercials P.s. Kingfish: After you punch him, put him under your Disco and let him taste some oil!!! |

I agree with Blue, except Kick him in the Nads. A good swift kick in the pills ought to teach him a lesson. Then drain the oil out of his truck when he isn't looking and get him to go 4 wheeling with you. This will give you both something to laugh about for years to come! Good Times... Larry |

Paul Schram, My wife was on the interstate in her NEW '02 Outback Sport. Traffic was stopped because of an accident ahead. A fella pulling a cattle-trailer behind his pickup didn't notice that traffic had stopped, and at full-speed slammed the Taurus that was behind my wife.... The damage didn't look THAT bad, the bumper was hanging off, the glass was out of the hatch and back windows, the quarter and rear passenger door was crunched pretty good, but, it would have still been drivable. Initial estimate for the repair was $9800..... they totalled it, though, because they can't get the parts for the new body style yet, it would have been waiting for months before they could begin working on it. So, we bought a Disco for her today.

Oh lord, this thread is going to start some trouble. I used to own an xterra for a year and a half, not an overall bad truck but I would never waste the money on all the mods some of the guys at the Xterra club do the base vehicle just isn't good enough in my opinion. Probablly the best reason Discos are better than Xterras is that Kyle is a much better moderator than that Ian guy at the Xterra club (talk about issues) |

Well Erik , Heather drove her Disco for well over 300 miles with no oil pressure.. Oil light blazing and lifters about to fly out. It would get hot and lose all its power so she would have to run the shoulder for a bit till it got its shit back together. (I was really wanting it to die at this point) This happened three times.... Each time I dropped the pan and worked some magic when I got time and it continued on as if nothing happened. This amazed even me. Let that Exxterra lose it for a few miles then tell me how practical it is. Most just havnt been put in the position to know how well the Disco is as getting your ass home... Ya, that's nice.. Not like I said that it was some great vehicle.. Just that it does do some things better then the Disco. So do most cars.. Didn't say anything about "hey, lets drain every fluid but, gas and see if it runs.." Dude, you still harboring pent up frustration from the last Xterra thread? |

Dancing bannana... love it. As for th Exterra, it is the perfect vehicle for what it is designed for. Your typical generation X, Y, or whatever to go to drive to the top of a mountain on a paved road and park it in a parking lot while they go mountain bike, snow board, and hike. They can do all this with a warranty, OK mileage, and bright flashy colors, flares, and racks. Personally I can't stand them. My wife wanted to look at them so we went for a test drive. I sat in back and spent the entire test drive looking at the top of the ceiling (I'm 6'4"). Nice attempt at copying the Disco roof line though. Real original. Todd And no, I'm not knocking the generations, I am one of those "X" people. |

As I see it Kyle, working on the Disco keeps me in tune with my life. I've said it many times before, I've never owned a vehicle that requires so much to maintain. But, I've always owned boring cookie cutter Hondas, and where is the fun in that? I do have to say that the '97 Prelude was alot of fun to drive but I had to let down the back seat to haul anything. However, when I get home from a long hot day, it's nice to crawl under the hot Disco and get a little more dirty. Also, knowing that I can go so many places and just the feeling of the beast can make me happy.. Peace.. RS |

Started out as one of those strange occurances and ended up pissing me off... So I told her to keep on riding till the bastard tossed something out. We have two 4.0s sitting here in crates so I really wasnt worried about the after math. Each time I woud get a little time and drop the pan and get all the BS out of the screen and it would go on about its buisness like nothing had happened... Rob heard it. I mean all the lifters had collapsed and it was giving all the death signs...lol It hates me.. Kyle |

If the Rover engines were built to modern tolerances it would have seized up. Thank goodness that our vintage shortblocks still have that 70s charm. I have loved that engine ever since it has been in the Vista Cruser. |

*I* have a Subie and a Series...... But, as a Jedi, I have *patience*.... Leslie, you shouldn've sold the Wag Kyle, I drove the 360 for a month with 0 oil pressure. it did finally develop rod knock, but it had so many issues at that point that i went out and got myself another oil burner for $250. peter |

One of my buds bought an Xterra and thought it was awesome until he tried to open his sunroof and realized that he was staring at the bottom of the roof basket. It completely took up all of the sunroof. That's quality engineering. Not to mention it's a piece of crap. When we go off-road, we take my 97 disco. |

I haven't sold the Wag yet, but I need to! It's sat for 2-years now with a dead TF727.... all the cash that comes in gets designated for other things before I can get any put aside to getting the thing to run enough to get someone to take it away.... Want it?

Try getting parts over the counter for the Disco...good luck!! My Disco's a pain in the ass. By the looks of it, people can't even get trailer hitch wiring for them!! It will be replaced by an Xterra as soon as the Disco's paid off. Just being honest. |

no Leslie, I'm not a big fan of 727 myself. there's a 68 lined up for me, hope it doesn't go away before i can grab it. it's got a buick 350, so i can either put that mill into the rangie, or ZF 4-speed and LT230 - in the wag "Fed up" - no problems getting OTC parts for the Disco. No more than for an old jeep. every evening my heart skips a beat when this guy rappels himself using the Xterra as an anchor... some day this rock will slide away from under the right front wheel... peter |

For real Peter, at least chock the wheels or something, preferably don't do it at all though. I find it really funny that all the comercials show the things offroad but technically going offroad in it voids your warranty (if the dealer wants to be a real dick it can void the whole thing, if you are lucky only damange that occured due to going offroad wont be covered) |

I had a 91 Grand Wagoneer, and that thing was a real pain in the butt trying ot get parts for. It had the old 360 engine, with a ford carb. and basically a "parts bin" of other products. And it was a pain to owrk on. I've found the exact opposite with the rover. Parts are very easy to find. Just check this site, and you'll find tons of info. "Fed Up", well just sell the disco and get the exterra, and stop bashing the disco on this site. You don't like it, fine, then get rid of it. My boss and a coworker in my department have Exterra's and I can't stand them. Well actually my boss has a king cab frontier. Horrible ride quality, the seating position is really awful. They are way to close to the floor, and the Trans/tranfer case take up to much floor space. We looked at getting one before the disco, but jsut could't stand the ride. Plus I've found the Rover community here to be very friedly and a lot of help. Much more than any other car forum I've been on. Bmw, Jeep, PT Cruiser, and Miata. I asked if anyone wanted to help me install Sliders one time, and received a ton of responces. Some guys were going to drive about 2 1/2 hours to help me. Got to love that. Sorry for the long post, but jsut had to say how much I love this site, and my Rover. Zak |
