There are some great books on Colorado Trails. Are you looking for something in the front range?

Right now alot of trails are closed in the area becasue of the fires and fire danger. Most all of the National Forests in the are are closed indefinently. Email me and I can get some names of trails that are still open.

Eric (or whoever is in the know),

I am going to Crested Butte next week primarily as a mointain bike trip. However, I was wondering if there were any good trails around Crested Butte or Gunnison for 4x4. Any good ideas?

For some reason I see myself getting a book :)

Curtis,

there's a nice trail near Crested Butte called Schofield Pass/Devil's Punch Bowl. You might want to give that one a look. High scenic value.

Where ever you go, call before you get there. As Eric said some of the Nat'l Forest areas are closed but some of them are opening up as well. Pike National Forest and San Isabel just reopened completely last week...

The best way I've found to keep up is simply call the local Ranger Station for whatever Nat'l Forest you're going to. You can link to them from here:

http://www.fs.fed.us/recreation/map/state_list.shtml#Colorado

Also, bear in mind that this year (so far) forest closures have only been based on actual fire not on fire risk (unlike New Mexico which has had nearly all forests closed off)...

Good luck and have fun.

As far as areas to go, there are alot of good trails in Summit County and Eagle County (near all the ski resorts). Most of the trails fall within the White River National Forest.

Crystal City/Schofield Pass/Devil's Punchbowl is a great trail:

OVERVIEW -- The trail, as I took it from Crested Butte to Marble was relatively easy in a stock Truck. The road going down between Sheep Mountain and Crystal Peak was quite the spectacular view with a steep drop off on the passenger side. Shortly after this rocky descent, you'll notice the Deadhorse Mill off to the left. It's a great place to grab some photos. There are many places to camp and fish all along the trail!

HOW TO GET THERE -- From Crested Butte, CO take Gothic Road past the ski resort and stay left. This turns into Forest Road 317 and takes you over Schofield Pass (10,707 ft.) while following Rock Creek. Continue on FR 317 till a fork at which point you'll vear left on FR 314. FR 314 will take you past Beaver Lake, Marble, and eventually to Highway 133 which can be taken North through Carbondale where you can take Highway 82 North to I-70.

DIFFICULTY -- This trail rates a 5 out of 10.

Crystal City/Devil (FR314) is how to find it on 4x4trail.net. It will have GPS info as well.

Chu, Bill, Nathan, and Eric,

Wow - thanks guys. There is some good detailed info here. Crystal City/Schofield Pass/Devil's Punchbowl sounds like a perfect run. I will br dragging some people in a stock T-100 with me so the difficulty rating sounds great.

Thanks a bunch for the tip on 4x4trail.net also. My searches on the internet have been unfruitful thus far. This will help a lot.

:)

I'd be careful taking a T100 over schofield. There's some narrow and sharp switchbacks. Not a biggy, but there's always that small chance to slide off the cliff and roll down a couple thousand feet until the truck falls apart into a million pieces. :)

I actually had a T-100 a few years ago. It is an OK truck offroad. What you warn about the switchbacks is right though. Thier turning radius is terrible.

There are tons of 4wd trails around Crested Butte. Two of my favorites are Taylor Pass and Pearl Pass. Both go to Aspen and would be great day trips. Pearl is a little more difficult than Taylor. Ask around for directions when you roll into town.

If your are camping in Conifer, you might consider Redcone or Webster Pass. They start 12 miles west of Bailey(on 285). Redcone is by far the harder trail, but also very senic.
