Hey Guys and Gals

I got one of those nifty plug in coolers for my birthday, and want to install a 12v lighter socket in the trunk area, to avoid the 15 foot cord laying across the lenghth of the truck...

Anyone done this? ( of course someone has)

Is it as simple as drilling a hole and tapping into a hot wire back there? If so, whats a constant hot wire, rather than running one all the way to the fuse box?

Thanks in advance!

If you want a constant hot wire, you might as well run one direct from the battery.

One 8 amp live wire on passenger side rear by tail light/trailer connector
more on the drivers side rear, if you don't have rear a/c, but you'll have to pull the panel out to get to it

I've done it and it was really easy. There is a constant hot wire bundled in with the trailer harness, open up the rear passenger side tail light from inside and you will see the round plug made to attach a trailer harness to and with it will be two wires with some kind of end cap things on them one of them gives constant power (even when the car is off) and the other gives power only when you are in reverse. The constant power one should be purple, tap into that and run the ground wire to the frame somewhere back there and you are good to go. Your owners manual actually says something about these wires somewhere, maybe try looking up "trailer wiring harness" in the index.

Good Luck,
Carter

You can also get a 'kit' at radio shack, it comes with the plug and mounting bracket.

cheers

im pretty sure I remember someone saying it is fused, not sure what amp though so I put another inline fuse on it when I wired the plug up.

I would always suggest putting a fuse on both ends of a long cable run like wiring in the rear, just for precaution.

I'm curious to know more about the rear air conditioning wiring? Where is that at? Under the rear drivers side storage bin area?

go get a complete package .

socket, wires, and fuse at a boating supply center(coast gaurd approved is good stuff) and run the large diameter wire all the way from the battery using the supplied inline fuse.

the purple wire was meant to power trailer lights i would be leary of asking it to run the large amp draw devices you can plug into a lighter socket.

I mounted mine in the bottom of the center compartment between the front seats. Its on the back side down low and has worked great for charging phones, running my computer and such.

I did it. It is in the right rear storage area panel. I tapped into the already installed cigarette lighter and ran it under the carpet/door panels.
It was easy, and works great.
Put in a line fuse.

I have mounted 2 plugs in the left rear storage area. Wiring comes along the left chassis rail and up with the wiring for the lights. This comes from the spare battery fitted so there is no problems of getting a dead battery when outback. The duel battery system works great and has been in for the last 4 years with no problems. Just make sure its fused!

The spare battery idea intriques me. I am looking to install an extra socket in my 99 Disco 1 for tailgating this fall but was worried that running a TV back there might result in my being stranded post game. How hard is it install a spare battery? I had read an earlier post but it involved bending and cutting things that I had never heard of to make room for it. If there is an easier way? Please let me know.

I don't have rear a/c but was thinking about getting the panel that covers the rear a/c unit, and hiding an air compressor behind that. the same idea would work for batteries but whether installing a battery or aircompressor you're going to need a significant cable (2 or 4 gauge) to make the set up work properly.

I have a 6/97 TDI 300 and if you remove the jack and tools from in front of the air box the guard is designed to take a battery with no cutting or shutting. Wiring is pretty simple to have an isolater system that seperates the batteries when the key is off. Almost every second 4x4 down here has a duel battery system to run a fridge, have to keep the beer cold some how.

Thanks Ian. It sounds pretty simple. Do you have any diagrams for wiring (preferably "Wiring for Dummies") or know were I can find one?

I do have 3 diagrams for duel battery set ups, tried to send them but to many meg to down load. My system would not send it. Places like ARB, TJM, Opposite lock all have kits.

Ian,
Thanks again for the info. I will check them out. Because there is nothing worse than warm beer even a dead battery.
