Just yesterday I noticed a loud tapping sound in the engine that gets louder and more frequent with increasing rpm. Oil level is full. Help.

That's what I was thinking. But I solved the problem yesterday and no tools even touched my Disco. I was talking to a friend who had the same problem with his Buick Roadmaster. He was told by his mechanic that carbon deposits on the valves were a very likely source of the tapping and he should pour 1 pint of transmission fluid in the gas tank and then drive about 15-20 minutes. He did so and the problem totally resolved. After talking with my friend last pm I decided that I had nothing to lose and did the same. Tapping totally gone after about 20 minutes. Thanks for the input.

So if your transmission is making noise, do you just run in a pint of 93 octane?

What do you do after the 15-20 minutes of driving? Are you not supposed to drive more that that? Do you do it on a full tank of gas or what? I'd like more detail if you have it. I am really tired of my noisy lifters (or whatever it is) and if this could help I'd do it in a second. Just want all the info first.

Oh, does it smoke alot when you do this?

Thanks!
Shane

There was some sort of a mystery oil that went around for a while and I think its basically ATF. ATF is a very high detergent light oil and will mix well with gasoline to remove deposits fast. The only problem is some older cars with lots of gunk in the gas tank and fuel lines could suffer from sudden clogging due to all the dirt being dislodged at the same time. I would advise for you to replace your fuel filter right away. ATF with diesel works the same way too in cleaning the injectors of carbon deposits.

Just the inline fuel filter or is there one in the tank that must be cleaned/replaced too?

yeah i've heard of putting AFT in your crankcase. its supposed to do the same thing as those "pre oil change engine cleaners".

i never saw a response to:

how full your tank should be
did it smoke

I did it today with about 3/4 tank of gas. I poured in 1 pint of ATF in the fuel tank. No smoke and no apparent change in noise or anything for me. Probably just my imagination but seems to run a little better I think :)

My engine has been making "lifter" type noise for at least a year now so maybe I need several treatments to notice any real change....or maybe I do in fact have noisy lifters. We'll see.

Oh, I have driven about 1.5 hours (approx. 50 miles) with the ATF in the tank so far. I did pick up a replacement fuel filter to have on hand in case it gets clogged up.

When I initially put the 1/2 pint of ATF in the fuel I had ~3/4 tank of gas. There was never any smoke and never any rough idle, etc. I changed the fuel filter about 4 months prior to this problem occuring. Currently on 4th or 5th tank of fuel and no recurrence of tapping and disco runs well. Mike

I have seen ATF go directly into the carbs, but of course these are muscle cars, so no cats to worry about. Hell, I have seen water poured down carbs to shatter the carbon buildup, but what I have not seen to date, is a bottle of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale poured into a carb. Why you may ask, well who would waste that on a stupid engine.

Mike, did you pour 1/2 pint or 1 pint into a 3/4 full gas tank?

Bill, sorry about my previous post. It was 1 pint in ~3/4 full gas tank. Mike
