I'm getting a set of 265X75's for my disco II this week and I'm concerned about the spare. I understand that I can invert the spare tire carrier (excellent instructions in the archives!) but I'm not really excited about the idea of drilling holes. Has anyone had experience with the Yakima spare tire carrier on a Mega load warrior? It seems like a simple solution but I don't know how much it would through off the balance. If anyone has any experience with this I sure would appreciate some input, especially if you've got pictures. I imagine the back would look bare ass without a spare but throwing it on top sure seems easier than pulling out the door lining and drilling new holes. Thanks,

It is a very simple process to drill the holes. Hell, I used a Battery powered Makita to do it. After drilling, debur the holes to clean out, then paint black. Once you installed the inverted carrier, you will be hard pressed to tell the difference. The whole job took me about an hour or 4 beers in man time.

Plus, this is a great time to install a CB antenna mount bracket while you are back there. :)

Paul is right on. One thing you could check is if your carrier will slide up in the mounting holes. I did the flipping/drilling bit and then when I remounted the carrier pushing as high in the holes as it would go. Now with the spare (265/75 Dunlop R/T) mounted I have between 3/4 and 1" of clearance.

I think I misunerstood something. Do you drill the holes in the carrier or the door? If you drill the holes in the carrier then that really is no big deal, I thought you had to drill new holes in the door?
After taking that liner out have you had problems with rattles?

No drilling into the door required. Just into the spare tire carrier itself!

I have not had any problem of rattling or loose hardware after this simple modification.

Clem, I did this same thing just a month ago. It was really easy, all it took was a decent drill bit and some black paint. Go for it, the door looks like shit without the tire on the back, and also the door is so light without anything on it it is damn near impossible to shut it.

If you put your tire on the roof rack, then you have a great spot for one of those nifty 2 jerry can holders.

Thanks for all the info. I may pick up my drill after all. Jake, I've been thinking about those "nifty" jerry can holders but I can't find any, and I've been looking for three days now. If you have any tips on where I could see one that would be much appreciated. If someone made a jerry can holder / hi lift jack holder that would be very functional as well.
