Just replaced a leaky heater hose this morning and after driving around today, all of a sudden noticed the temp guage pegged at the top. The coolant level is full and the temperature is at about 190 degrees after driving across town in Phoenix at about 105 degrees outside. So the temperature isn't really overheated so I assume it's the guage or sending unit or a short in between. I thought the sending unit was the single wire device mounted to the passenger side of the water pump. I disconnected this and the guage stayed the same. I know that the temperature sending units work by lowering resistance to ground as the temperature rises so in order for the guage to peg at the top the circuit must be grounded. I guess my main question is this, is that the temp sender on the side of the water pump and if not where is it?

Thanks for any help

Ok, I know that sensor is not it. I just checked it and it's the oil pressire sending unit. So does anyone know where the temp sending unit is? The device on the side of the upper radiator hose neck (on the intake manifold) is the fan switch, can't seem to find the temp sender, and don't have a service manual.

Thanks for the assistance.

how did you come to the actual coolant temp?

Well, I asked all the questions and answered them too. Found the temp sender just behind the distributor next to one of the fuel injectors and it was the problem. Earlier today I pressure washed the engine so i could work on it without quite so much sledge to dig through. Anyway, the temp sender got a little corrosion around it and was reading less resistance to ground therefore causing the guage to read higher than actual. Just cleaned the terminal off and I'm back in business!

I'll post a couple of photos incase I'm not the only blind person that couldn't find the temp sender.

I got the coolant temp reading by putting a probe type, thermometer in the coolant through the radiator cap. Now this doesn't show the actual engine block temp. but it does tell me that 1) the coolant is at normal temperature 170-190. 2) that it is most likely flowing through the engine. If it wasn't flowing through the engine it would be much cooler. I also put my thermometer in the ac/heater duct and turned my heater on full blast, this actually got me a fairly accurate temp reading as it showed about 184. That reading would also be much cooler if the coolant wasn't flowing well through the engine or if the coolant level was low.

FYI (in case you didn't already know) to anyone the experiences an overheat. Under some circumstances turning the interior heat on full blast can help cool the engine a little because you are removing some of the heat from the coolant when you use the heater through the heater core.

Here are some photos on my sender unit
