Has anyone ever eliminated their mufflers? I have a 3.9 Disco w/ Flowmaster mufflers and no resinators. I did this to make the truck sound meaner but the diffreence was minimal. I want a meaner sound. |

I got rid of my resonator too and 1st had a "Turbo" muffler, I believe was the name of it and I liked the sound except for a annoying resonation at cruising speed in town. I ended up putting a normal muffler on and it's pretty quiet again, sounds better than stock but quiet. I like the mean sound too but for me it just didn't fit the ride. I'll save the real mean sound for my street rod. I had only a cat. converter which split into 2 tail pipes on an old Chevy 2wd hot rod pickup I had in high school and it sounded really mean and healthy, I liked it alot then but don't think I would appreciate it the same on my 95 Disco Shane qsiguy |

yeah i tore mine off about 4 months ago. guessing you are speaking of the resonator at the very rear of the exhaust. did not really notice all that much more noise at all. just added a 18" or so piece at the end. it was getting old and beaten up, so off it came and i am better person for it. really......just ask my girlfriend. |

My muffler finally rusted away just a few months ago. Pulled up to the valet for a local restaurant when my friend said "Hey, your muffler is hanging." And there it was, hanging at a 90 degree angle to the roadway by the hair of it's chinney chin chin. Gave it a swift kick to knock it off and that was that. One note, it's probably not a good idea to leave the muffler off without some sort of tubing to direct the exhaust flow. I left the broken pipe for quite some time which melted the housing for the left rear turn signal (the one on the bumper - it's a 95), which resulted in the whole light housing hanging by the wires. Got Trevor to have a pipe welded on and it's been fine since. |

What's the resonator supposed to do anyways? Mines all patched with "muffler weld" goop - wondering if I should just cut it off and clamp on a section of pipe. This wouldn't change the O2 sensor readings would it? I saw an interesting T-Landcruiser yesterday. The guy had run an extension off his exhaust pipe and up to the rear roofline of his truck. It was a diesel and belching black smoke. The only reason I could think of him doing this was so he could shut down the engine in deep water? Anyways - it looked like a good place to burn yourself... |

I had a glass pack put in place of the resonator a few weeks ago - it's held up a little higher for better departure. My cats apparently are still in okay condition. The question is, at higher rpm's, like in 3rd going uphill, I'm getting some fumes in the car. I still need to replace the actual muffler, (in the middle of the chassis) but might the fumes be a sign of a cracked manifold? There seems to be no correlation between the fan / air-conditioning being on or off and the presence of fumes at over 3500 rpms. Any ideas on this one? Cheers, e |

just rip the thing off stephen. won't effect the O2's at all. O2's are way up towards the front anyhow. purpose is to quiet down the engine a little. it does, but with it off you will not notice much more. i mean with my rack, lights and bigger tires the extra noise will not be heard by me. |

I meant remove the resignator AND the muffler? Has anyone done that? |

Yep. That is how mine is now. I needed a new muffler so my buddy thought it would be funny/interesting to just remove it (resonator was already gone) and replace with a straight pipe. Sitting at idle it is loud and has an OK, but not healthy sound. More the like sound of some hooptie piece of shit you see that had it's muffler fall off. Not quite that bad, but close enough. On the gas hard it actually sounds pretty good. But all the noise coupled with little forward motion is a little silly. Needless to say, I am putting a muffler back on. I would like to find something not exactly as quiet as stock, but quieter than the Borla I have heard. I'd like to hear the engine a little bit when I give it some gas, but don't want to wake up the neighbors backing out the drive in the morning. I am considering a flowmaster, but I have never heard any of the flowmasters in person. Tom |

Something I thought about regarding more aggressive sound from your truck - the impact it has while offroad. Personally, I enjoy the relative quiet and calm of getting far into the wilderness, or even just onto a normal offroad trail - but the thought of scaring every living creature away within a mile due to an enormously loud exhaust seems to do the concept of Land Rovering a dis-service. Just my opinion though... |

I pulled my muffler and resonator off and then had a glasspack welded in place of the muffler. So far I like it. It sounds good, and at highway speeds, it really isn't any louder than the hum of the MT's. The muffler shop was able to tuck the pipe tight against the rear muffler which will be better for the departure angle. |

ok...how about this...now I have seen three that have done this...mine and 2 others. the rear AC drain drains water onto the rear resonatorit the rusts out in the side next to the frame. on ce it rusts through you get a straight shot of hot air that heats up the rear step bolt that then melts a hole in the gas tank. now how stupid is that? |

Tom, Might I suggest installing a Dynomax muffler? It has a deeper sound, but way quieter than any flowmaster (2 or 3 chamber). This plus no resonator, you have a nice sounding engine. |

I am intriged by the Dynomax of which Ali and Ho speak. Ali - you got one? Did you get it in chi-town. Ho - you got one? You like it? Tom |

I have dual dynomax terminators on my scout they are bomber! way better then flowmaster. they have wrapped around end caps that are welded to the main chamber. when mine finnally give it up I will be getting them again. |

don't over complicate this - it's just a muffler. and it will for sure be dragged along the trails or speed bumps or whatever your terrain of choice... anyway - don't eliminate the muffler - no reason to subject your rear diff et al to that much directed heat. Do, at a minimum, a glass-pack and a tube over the rear axle. I would suggest, for what it's worth, to go for a flowmaster or dynamax muffler and get a custom tube that tucks up nicely over the rear axle. i avoided the glasspack idea - my truck is WAAAAY loud enough already. if you are concerned about CO2 leakage into the rear cabin, then extend it. I've sealed around my rear A/C drain (I have an SE-7) and such and notice no exhaust drift whatsoever. and my pipe stops just past the rear axle - nice and high - avoiding the rocks and such... /mike |

Tom, I got mine from, don't quote me on this, A1 muffler or Mike's muffler in Tx. I think it cost me $50 - $25 (rebate) back in '96. Still holding on great. Only a couple of light bashes from rocks and such. In fact, the muffler shop mounted them upside down such that the drain hole is pointing up! |

yep, i got mine from A1 also. the main reason i got them was as mike said, muffler is a muffler. and it worked just fine. |

ooops - that's a drain hole in the bottom? I thought it was a rusted out hole - so I plugged it! Should I go drill it out again or just leave it? |

Ho , I hope you arent talking about that rotting thing on the slinky. A muffler is NOT a muffler. Get a good one and get it up out of the way.... Stainless is niiiiiiice.... Well , unless you like that Tennessee back woods sound.... Yea Peters , that was a dig.... Kyle |

I cuttt mine off right after the y pipe comes back together. no mufflers at all now and very loud and throaty and I swear it has 100more hp - or just sounds like it.. I deflected the exhaust down and sealed all the holes in the back to keep exhaust stench from wafting in and making me too high. |
