My 95 Disco I was overheating yesterday while my wife was driving it. I drove it to work this morning watching the temp gauge (didn't get hot) but when I arrived it dumped coolant onto the pavement. Do I just have a stuck thermostat? Thanks in advance for any help. Chuck |

Chuck, I have a '96 and was having mucho problems this week with my truck getting very hot. However, I didn't dump any coolant unwillingly. Do you know where it came from? Be sure to check all the hoses up there. Anyhow, I pulled my t-stat and that didn't make any difference. When I pulled the t-stat I lost alot of fluid, so I put a gallon back in. When I got home Thursday night, drove 200 miles home with the heat on and the windows down! I drained the radiator and didn't notice any crap in there or anything. I did a complete flush of the system, and even used some of that Prestone Flush stuff. While doing that, I went ahead and reallly sprayed out the radiator fins in the rear, and what I could do through the front after pulling the grill off. Anyhow, yesterday was 95 degrees and had the a/c on all day, not one problem. Seems like the Disco just wanted a good flushing.. Hope that helps.. Peace.. RS |

I had the same issues a little over a month ago with my '95. Here's what I found and what I learned: my expansion tank ruptured at the seam joining the two halves (this should be the black coolant tank with the pressure relief cap). The pressure relief cap failed, and the built up pressure blew the tank. I have read that this is common. FIND OUT WHERE THE COOLANT IS LEAKING FROM!!! Since the tank was ruptured, the cooling system would not hold pressure, and the coolant would boil more readily. It would work fine driving around town in the Las Vegas summer heat, and it, too, often percolated coolant after I parked the Disco and shut it down. Chances are that if your temp is registering normal during normal driving, your T-stat is fine and your radiator is fine. The coolant leaking after shutting down is due to a leak somwhere within the cooling system (that is supposed to be sealed); since the engine is still hot, but coolant isn't being circulated anymore, it boils out. I'll bet it is your expansion tank...easy to replace. But if the leak is coming from the hoses, replace them soon to avoid a total failure while driving. Probably also a good idea to check the rest of the cooling system while you are at it; I replaced my hoses and t-stat, along with the tank and cap for good measure. |

Same symptoms for my RRC 1995. Last year I took it into the local Jiffy Lube. They checked the coolant and the next day, it dumped some coolant. Turns out that they had opened the top cap on the rad to check the coolant/water ratio and had overtightened it. Also they didn't screw the cap on the exp. tank properly and it didn't seal. Hence when it got hot it wouldn't hold pressure. Once I found out, it held pressure since, no problems. Check these items first. $0.02 done. |
