20 miles into a trip this afternoon I noticed smoke out the back of my 1997 D1 (rearview mirror reflected smoke behind me). No lights on the dish and truck running strong at 50 mph on country roads. Pull over and look underneath and see ATF everywhere. Looks like the stuff originated at the radiator taps where the transmission cooler lines connect to the radiator. I checked the hard pipes going into the rad and the two compression nuts were tight but the pipes themselves seemed to move a bit too much for me to believe they could seal well. Anyway, I had it towed in and am waiting til Monday morning to get it looked at by my local mechanic. By the way, I had the radiator rodded and cored last week so the shop may have failed to connect the two transmission coolant lines properly. Is there an o-ring or something in there? The oil cooler lines into the radiator on the passenger side are tight and the lines themselves do not move at all. Any ideas? Ron Ward |

Ron, There is an o-ring on the end of each formed metal line after the nut. It slides over the formed end of tubing and creates the seal between the lines and the rad. If these are missing - that most likely is your problem. Bill |

Good eye Bill, that's exactly what my problem was. The rad had been cored and rodded and repainted. The paint on the threads of the ports for the transmission cooler lines was just thick enough to make the nut tighten before seating the pipe and o-ring all the way. They went at it again today and now I'm squared away. Ron Ward |
