About three trail rides ago I noticed a creaking/popping noise. The noise is coming from the front suspension area. I have crawled underneath and have inspected the shocks, springs and sway bar.

Even more confusing: The noise doesn't occur when taking corners fast around town. The noise only occurs when the wheels are on uneven terrain.

Sometimes I can feel the popping noise in the floor board.

Any ideas? I have got to get this fixed soon. I will be moving again and have many miles to travel.

BW,

I am a little hungover this morning but.......

Is this an ACE equipped D2 or Non ACE?

You said you've checked the springs, but take another look at your front springs to see if the spring itself has not twisted out of the detent and check that the rubber isolators are still there or damaged. Those isolators are supposed to absorb the "noise" instead of letting it transfer into the chassis.

Suggestion: get a breaker bar and check the torque on the radius arm bolts. I do not know what the torque requirements are, but it is a lot. Just tighten the hell out of them.

170 lb ft. Torque bolts with weight on suspension.

Front radius arm bolts should be 145 lb-ft. if memory serves me. I have the popping noise coming from the front of my suspension also. I think it is either the panhard rod bushings or the radius arm bushings. All my bolts are solidly tightened to factory spec (except the ones in my head), so just check. :)

Diesel, recovering today just like Paul

Hmm , I would go for the track locator first before the radius arms... :)

I checked the springs again-looks good. I checked the rubber isolater-looks good.

As far as the radius arm bolts, panhard rod bushings and track locator. I need a little help in identifing these.

I THINK the radius arm bolts are the ones that go through the very large round bushing part that lies just forward of the axel. Correct?

I don't have a clue what the panhard rod bushings are or what the track locator is. I'm sure I have looked at it a thousand times. I don't know all the tech names.

Yeah Man,

Nomenclature is a bitch because everyone I talk to, calls things out differently. Same crap happens in airplane land.

Consider the axle as a "host" location for the radius arms and the Panhard rod. The Panhard is the rod running L to R along the front of the axle with the LH side attaching to the chassis and the RH side attaching to the axle itself. There are bushings at each end. The radius arms attach at the axle and run aft (perpendicular) and attach to the chassis. There are two bolts in the front where it is attached to the low side of the axle and 1 bolt where it is attached at the chassis.

Thanks Paul.

Kyle, what is the track locator?

BW, if it's a "popping" sound, then it's your pan hard rod. If a "clunk" that feels like it's under your feet, then it's your radius arm bolts. I had both.

Kept tightening them to spec, and they kept loosening again. Finally I took an 18" piece of pipe and put it on the end of my 1/2" drive ratchet and tightened them as tight as I could. No more noises!

My pop/clunk came from a set of sagging 777 springs. They would unseat pretty easily.
