Was browsing this evening and came across those sliders at Thatched Roof's website. Galvanized steel, can be painted. I was curious if anyone out here on D=WEB had them, and there thoughts on them. I also was curious about powder coating them, as I have a friend who can do that kind of stuff. Any comments would be appreciated.. Peace.. Roberto |

Junk as in unusable, or that they would bend easier than say Rockware? |

I haven't really looked at Rockware ones, so I can't say how they compare, but for the money they're really good. Jeff A. has a pair on his Disco, maybe he'll pipe in about what he thinks of them. http://www.thatchedroofgarage.com/ -L |

They are the Bearmachs, but I don't know if "crap" is the best word for them. I have seen a pair on a 110 and they seemed stout to me, although I can't recall how they mounted. I think "utilitarian" might be a better word. I think they were functional, but not necessarily pretty. Probably a better fit for the series/defender then a Disco. Also, I can't be sure, but I think they lack the disco "curve" so the might just be a straight piece of steel. |

OK, Yes, they are the Bearmach for the Disco and they are curved. They mount to the body mounting bolts (not the body) along with the addition of 2 more holes drilled. Stout is a good word for them. They are 2X4 box section and I do have some in black. I agree they aren't the prettiest but they do a good job, especially for the price. David |

don't powdercoat if you really plan on dragging them over the rocks. the caoting will tear right off and there's no good way to fix it. it would be better to paint them and just keep the rattle can handy for touch-ups. |

I had a set for a short while. I was attracted to the price and I didn't think they looked that bad. I tried finding advice on DW about them but at the time no one had owned any. I think it was Ho that suggested that I buy them and let everyone know how they are. When I was playing at a construction site across from my house, I barely hit a rock and the slider dented my front quarter. I ended up taking them off before going on a trip because I was afraid that they would cause serious damage if they took a moderate hit. The sliders are made very tough but they do not mount to the door sill. Instead they mount by brackets arms. The design makes it impossible to guard against the an upward blow since there would be leverage on the arms. Since they are sort of tall and reduce clearance I decided it would be safer not to have anything at all. Basically, they were for looks and instead of preventing damage, they would increase the potential for damage. If I became high-centered even on a dirt mound, they would bend up into the body. |

Neal, how much lower did they hang? And if you had hit the rock with the plastic down there would it not have done more damage? Not doubting you but would like a little more info. Thanks alot.. Peace.. RS |

I've seen Jeff A. rake over things with his, and w/o 'em he would have been into the doors if it had just been the plastic there.... they're much better than the stock plastic, IMHO; you just have to realize the limitations of any of your gear (regardless of who made it, or what it is... everything has shortcomings of some sort....) FWIW.... -L |

Robert, They hung down about 5 inches. I wouldn't have hit the rock if the slider wasn't there. I would hade more clearance from the plastic. Leslie, I realized the limitations of these sliders- don't have anything tap the slider from underneath or the slider will push up into the quarter. The sliders were already paid for and I don't have the money right now to get something better and I still took them off. They look cool but offer little or no protection. Once I took into consideration that they also reduced clearance and increased my chances of hitting the sliders, I removed them. |

5"? I really don't think that Jeff's hang THAT low.... Jeff and I were at Uwharrie in his, sliding over rocks, and yes, landing on them, and they did fine. They didn't reduce clearance in any way. I wonder if there are two different versions here, or, if they were installed differently? Do you have pics? I'll see if I can round up Jeff and take some of his rig and we'll compare how they're set up..... -L |
