To my disbeliefe, when going to change my burned out brake light bulb, i found that the assy was melted to the back of the light assy, then i went to the other side, and the same thing, bulb carrier melted to the assy, there is also a crack above the running/brake light bulb is going through, all yellowed and brittle from the heat!
this is a disco 1, has anyone ever seen this before?
The lenses are available @ 31.95 ea
but do they come with the bulb holders?
and i picked up a set of 1157 LED replacement bulbs so it wont happen again.
my elec system is fine not over charging.
HAS anyone else seen this before?

Ken, try www.theledlight.com for those lights. Lots of cool stuff on the site.

Peter, if you are talking about the lights/lenses on the bumper then I can assist you. I recently busted a lens back there and went to the dealership to buy a replacement. You get the Entire assembly including new bulbs for around $30, which is what I assume you are saying is $31.95. It is fairly simple to replace. Although my rig was from up North so the nuts were rusted on pretty good, as well as caked in mud:) Anyhow, got it all done in about 15 minutes. I got an oil filter and o-ring while in there so my bill was right at $40.

The lenses in question are the rear lenses, brake/running/reverse/and fog. the damage was to the brake light bulb area, the plastic was so melted that when trying to remove, the surrounding plastic cracked, and the plastic just above the bulb/top of housing is a bit melted too, the batt is 12.8v resting, with engine running it's at 13.5 of so, no overcharging here.
I figure that the LED bulbs will be much cooler in temp so that i won't have this problem again.
the LED bulbs Pep boys @ 8.99 ea
also picked up a new battery, optima red top,119.00 3 year unconditional gaurentee.
and the lense assy's atlantic british 31.95 ea to be ordered on monday.
I hope this problem isn't a D1 thing, Please check your rear tail/brake lights and let me know!
Thanks

My brake light sockets on both sides of my D1 are melted to the bulb, and i still have problems with them to this day. Very frustrating because they are a pain in the @ss to get to them because of that stupid rubber seal that gets in the way.

I just replaced both rear light assy's, Yes can you believe that they're only 31.95 ea? anyway, can anyone tell me why an off the shelf LED replacement 1157 bulb will only work for my brake light only, not the running light? i bench tested both running and brake on the LED bulb, they both work but not in the bulb holder!
I'de like like to not melt another set of lenses! Help.
Hugh, try and remove the whole assembly, it will be easier, there are two thumb screws behind the lense, or just call atlantic british and order a new set every 60K miles or so.
But why wont the LED bulbs work properly?????

The reason you have melted light sockets might have something to do with the bulbs you have. I recently replaced my rear fog lights with the non-european version and had a similar problem. Luckily I had a brake light go out just after that and checked the fogs just for kicks. They had started to melt the light holder just a bit. Also when I put the bulbs in in the first place they were a tighter fit than the OEM bulbs.
That should have been my first tip off. I replaced the bulbs a second time with Sylvania bulbs in the green package (European type) as opposed to the red. No problem since.

So far, I haven't suffered this problem-yet.

What I do have a problem with is the bulbs burning out! It is so bad that I've threatened to remove the jump seats and use Dzus fasteners so I can get at the damned sockets easier. After cutting my fingers pretty badly (yes, my wife does say I whine too much about such things), I decided the only way to do it was to remove the entire assembly-then, I found out how hard it was to get the rubber gasket back in place. I now buy bulbs in much larger packages so that when I get pulled over for having no tailights again, I can show the LEO the record of when I last replaced them and the stock of bulbs I have to prove to him that I'll fix it soon!

Perhaps the LEDs would reduce the likelihood of additional burnouts? I'll have to try it. Thanx for the hint.

As for the price of replacements, why is it that this light only costs $30 and the ones in the bumper are $65?

Paul
