Hello,

Saturday Morning when I turned on my Garmin Street Pilot, I was greeted with a "chirp" which was followed by a black screen. That's it, no satellite aquisition, no warnings about driving and reading; just a black screen. Am I hosed on this or are there people out there who can repair / rebuild these things. On a bright note, this could be a good excuse to upgraded to a Garmin 176c.

LOL,

Yeah I have new batteries and was plugged into the cigar lighter at the time. The unit is definately getting power, just no output other than the black screen.

Have you plugged it up to a computer to see if the computer can communicate with it still?

I was wondering if the GPS itself was functioning, and the screen canked, or if the whole unit is blitzed..... that way, if you call Garmin, they can price you just a screen swap, if that's the problem, or, you'll know that you're better off just buying a new one anyway. Or, it could be, that it can be "reset", that it is confused, per se, and a computer might be able to nudge it to straighten itself out... I've seen weird things like that with other devices (albeit not a Garmin GPS..... so I can't say if it's just confused, or is down for the count).

I'm assuming that it's over a year old, right?

Anyway, 1-800-800-1020 is Garmin's Repair/Support number....

Good luck!

paul,

garmin has been really good about repair/ replace for me.

They charged me $16 bucks to replace a unit with a unit that was 4 years newer with way more funtion.

Musky,

I just emailed them to see what's up. Hopefully I can work some kind of deal with them.

garmin was very slow (7 days) to get details about the 176c to me, but eventually they did answer my questions, just be prepared to wait if emailing.

On some Garmin units, holding down the Mark button while turnig on the unit does a reset. All data will be lost and the unit will set back to factory defaults.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Rob,

I tried the "power up and mark" boot and a software screen appeared. But it stayed on for only 6 seconds, then blank screen again. Then I attempted power up for alamac reload, but nothing appears.

So I waited 5 minutes and tried power up again and the "Street Pilot" page popped up for 2 seconds then the screen went blank. This looks like a job for Garmin, therefore I am awaiting an email reply from them.

Okay, final update.

Yesterday I recieved the Street Pilot back from Garmin. For $99, the unit circuit card was repaired, screen replaced, latest software uploaded and to include shipping back to my Philly Address. I am very pleased with the results so far and recommend this process before spending big cash replacing the unit.

Paul out...............
