What is/are the best manuals to get for the 97 disco V8i that has body and engine components. Just got the disco about 8 months ago and want to do whatever work on it I can instead of taking it to a mechanic. Any feedback would be helpful? Also, any good sources to get them from.

Thanks

http://www.roverconnection.com/Plaza/rcwsmy5.htm

That's the best manual, and one place that has them. Nathan might have them, too.... check at http://www.discountrovers.com

Don't bother with the Haynes, IMO... get the real manual, it's a big help....

Good luck,

John, Leslie is right, the Haynes manual is not very useful at all. I bought one for mine and have yet found anything I can use.. Get the Factory manual, It costs alot but well worth it, especially if you want to disasseble body/trim parts, it shows you exactly where the screws and clips are hiding. Good Luck, JMcD

Thanks for the input. That's the route I'll go. The Haynes is cheap enough that if it has any use, i could get that also or do you guys find it a total waste of money?

naw, it's probably worth getting it if for no other reason than to look up easy stuff and fluid capacity.. The factory manual is very BIG and cumbersome to flip thru real quick. JMcD

John,

Problem with that is when you're outside greasy on a Saturday afternoon, the kids are surfin' on the internet, you fight for the computer, dial-in, post here on D-web, and everyone else is out for the day wheelin'.... Then you have to wait 'til Monday morning to get a reply, and the person that has a manual with them with the image you need has a busted scanner, and the one that has a good scanner left the manual at home.... so it's Tueday evening before you get a copy of the picture that you needed Saturday to see exactly what you need, so then you're off to the parts store after work on Wednesday, to have the parts arrive Saturday, but they're closed on Sunday so you pick up the parts Monday afternoon so that you can finish the job on Tuesday, a week and a half after you started...

Get a manual. A good one. :)

Leslie, yep, sounds exactly like what I've been doing the last few months so i need the manuals.I must say this site is awesome for getting info. Some very knowledgable people here and the debates are good also so you can here individual opinions. Like I said, i have only had my disco for 8 or so months so i'm just learning it and it's quirks.

thanks again everyone. John

i keep trying to use the haynes manual, but it pretty much sucks. i just replaced rear rotor and bearings, and the haynes manual was very useless. the nice blow up picture in the workshop manual did the trick.

Buy every manual you can get your hands on! It's still cheaper than bringing it to the dealer just once!

Back when I had a Jeep, I had the Chilton's manual, and it was okay. The Haynes was better, because it had better pictures. But, that was when I was still learning about doing 'anything' on a vehicle. After awhile, you get past it being much help at all. Then, I bought the workshop manuals for the Jeep, and WOW what a difference it made.

So, I've gotten rid of the Jeeps, and have my Rovers. My Series had its Green Bible with it, and it makes doing 'anything' a breeze compared to looking in the Haynes manual. So, with the Disco, I just ordered the factory book instead. Since then, I found and flipped through a copy of the Haynes manual. Well, like JRoc said, it's always good to have another manual... even if in this case, it's just so you can show anyone else how much better the factory manual is over the Haynes, lol.....

Phillip,
Yes, the factory is the best for home use. Even if, for example, you're not goint to follow the directions in it for building your own ZF rebuild jig, the parts that you do use will be SO much more helpful for ya.... IMHO.

FWIW...
