Opinions vary one the steel wheels and everyone is entitled but I have a question. I have the opportunity to pick some steel wheels up at a great price right now and am probably going to do so. Unfortunately I won't be lifting my truck for a while due to funds since I'd like to do the springs/shocks/tires all at once. In the meantime if I get the steel wheels I'm thinking I'd rather run them instead of my stock rims (I just like the look in the meantime).

Is there any problem with running steel rims with stock tires/suspension due to the rim offset?

Anyone have pics of this set up?

Thanks,
Todd

I had AR steel wheels on a stock height D2 with 245/75x16's with out any issues.

Yep, I have AR steel wheels on a stock suspended Disco. They stuff with no trimming. It does get close in the front, but that is due to my ARB w/ a skidplate and dual Optima batteries. The wider wheels are a plus when cruising down the freeway. There is less sway. Another plus is the tighter turning radius in parking lots and on the trail. Also, you can easily pay them off with the stock alloys. There are some pics in my gallery. Hope this helps.

Mel - I looked at your gallery and have a question. What is the "Interior Rack" that you mention? I assume this is the rear cargo area. Do you have any pictures? My dad does sales at a sheet metal shop which is owned by an auto nut and has access to the facilities. I'm considering building a tiered rack in the back of my disco and am looking for ideas.

I've used the facilities to make/bend interior panels for my 2002 track car and everything turned out great.

I bought the interior rack from Atlantic British for about $120. It has proved to be very useful. It can hold 2 3-gallon jerry cans, an air compressor and a shovel easily. It's also good for groceries and stuff like that. I think that it would be easy to make (w/PVC pipe or something like that). Here's a pic rack

Here's a view of the AR wheels from the side, so you can get a perspective of how much further the wheels stick out. It is about 1 inch more on each side. AR

Mel - Is that a WRX in the garage?

Thanks for the pics. I was thinking of doing something that mounts just below the side windows. I need to get behind the panels to see what sort of support structure is there. Has anyone already done this?

Todd, if you're getting the genuine LR steelies, you shouldn't have any problems putting them on without a lift. You might have rubbing issues off road with other steel wheels as they will not have the same offset.

Good luck!

Yeah, that's a WRX in WR blue. It is my dad's weekend track car and my brothers future car. At the local drag strip we got it to run a 13.1 @ 114mph(@ 3500 feet, 85 degress, some humidity). I am guessing that it has about 290hp. We are still working on the suspension, most likely we will go with a 50mm coil-over kit. Then it will be ready for some real racing.

If your WRX is stock, then it has 227 hp. That has been confirmed by a few different magazines.

Previous versions of the car, in Japan, were grossly underrated to pass under that country's agreed upon 290 Maximum HP rule. We are not so lucky. :)

I understand a manual boost controller, removing the first cat, exhaust and intake mods will get you to 300 crank HP pretty quick though!

Love the black Disco on black Steelies... very cool looking.

Yeah it's not stock. It has a Vishnu Stage 0 kit which has a manual boost controller w/ a re-tuned ECU (among other things) that safely raises the boost. You can get over 300hp by eliminating the cats and putting a new turbo-back exhaust, but then you would have to replace the fuel pump and the fuel rail. A stock WRX on a dyno will produce about 180hp. We have never dynoed the car, but it is probably around 230 now. I've seen 300hp WRX's run high 12's on street tires!

Ahhhh!!! A car like that should not be run in a straight line ;-)

Mel-

What size tires are you running on the 16x7 AR wheels in the above picture?

Do you have any specific reason for choosing the AR over others?
